LEGO Pikachu Pokemon Set is Disappointing in Person

LEGO is about to launch its first Pikachu set, but initial reactions from fans who’ve seen it aren’t all positive. Many people have wanted official LEGO sets based on the Pokemon world for a long time, but this particular product isn’t meeting expectations for some.

The announcement of LEGO Pokemon sets followed a partnership between The LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company, which began in 2025. While many expected these two popular brands to team up, this marked the first time official LEGO sets based on Pokemon would be available, as Mega Bloks had previously held the license. In January 2026, LEGO revealed several sets, including one featuring Pikachu, the famous face of the Pokemon franchise. Although a Pikachu set was anticipated, the initial response from fans has been somewhat disappointing.

Pokemon Fans Are Disappointed With LEGO Pikachu and Poke Ball Set Design

A Reddit user named GK686 recently shared a photo of the new LEGO Pikachu and Poke Ball set they found in a LEGO store. Although the set isn’t officially available until February 27th, some fans were able to see it in person at certain locations. GK686 expressed disappointment with the design after seeing it, noting that while it had a few good points – like the lightning bolt base – it wasn’t very impressive overall. They specifically criticized Pikachu’s face, particularly the eyes and nose, and said it actually looked worse than similar Pikachu figures made by Mega Bloks.

Pokemon Fans Think Mega Bloks Did Pikachu Sets Better

Mega Bloks created a number of Pikachu building sets during their time making Pokemon toys. Many fans particularly liked the 2022 Motion Pikachu set, feeling it more accurately captured Pikachu’s appearance from the official Pokemon series. This set was also interactive – a crank on the base allowed the model to ‘run’ in place. They also offered other sets, like the Jumbo Pikachu, at affordable prices.

A LEGO Pikachu building set received a lot of criticism on Reddit. Over 7,300 users upvoted comments expressing disappointment with the design and its $199.99 price tag, which many felt was too high compared to similar sets from Mega Bloks. Some users also thought the included Poke Ball wasn’t as good as previous versions made by Mega Bloks.

The Pokémon LEGO releases on February 27th aren’t limited to just one item. You’ll be able to get a LEGO Eevee for $59.99, and a larger, more detailed set featuring Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise for $649.99. Many people actually prefer the design of the Eevee model, even though it’s smaller. Eevee is made of 587 pieces, while the Pikachu and Poke Ball set has 2,050. The positive reaction to Eevee’s design has also pointed out some problems fans have with the larger Pikachu set.

It’s unclear how the negative reaction to the Pikachu and Poke Ball LEGO set will affect sales. However, this is just one of many official Pokémon products LEGO plans to release in the future. LEGO might listen to fans and improve Pikachu’s design if it appears in more sets later this year.
