FF7 Remake: How to Beat the Wavering Heart Side Quest

Even with a major crisis unfolding around Cloud and his friends in Chapter 14 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, they still find time for a bit of fun. The side quest ‘Wavering Heart’ involves a pull-up competition against the colorful owner of the Honeybee Inn in Wall Market, and you need to win to finish it.

This side quest is like the ‘Burning Thighs’ challenge from Chapter 9, ‘The Town That Never Sleeps,’ but a bit more complex. It can be quite difficult if you’re aiming for all the rewards. Here’s a guide on how to complete ‘Wavering Heart’ in Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

How to Beat the Wavering Heart Side Quest in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

This optional quest begins at the Wall Market gym – the same location where you might have finished the ‘Burning Thighs’ quest. If you haven’t visited before, you’ll find the gym right next to the entrance to the Corneo Colosseum.

The mini-game is played like a squat challenge, but with a few more steps. Basically, you need to do more pull-ups than your opponent – Andrea, in the first round. The game is divided into two 30-second sets, and whoever completes the most pull-ups across both sets wins.

Here are the most important things to know about the competition:

  • You need to match the repeating on-screen prompts, but the order is random and changes after each 30-second set, or halfway through.
  • Eventually, the on-screen prompt fades, so you’ll need to remember the four-button order while maintaining rhythm.
  • The pace will eventually increase, so your rhythm will need to adjust accordingly.
  • If your inputs are too slow or too fast, your fatigue will build up faster and increase the chances of Tifa falling, costing you precious time. If your timing is wrong, the prompts will reappear while Tifa is getting back on her feet, showing you how far off you were.

When playing on harder levels, you’ll have to quickly and repeatedly press a specific button to keep Tifa from falling off the bar. The game will show you which button to press, highlighted in gold, and a golden circle will indicate how long you need to keep pressing it.

To complete this quest, you just need to outperform Andrea, which shouldn’t be too hard – he tends to fall quickly during the minute you have to do pull-ups. Getting around 13 pull-ups should be enough to win. As a reward, you’ll receive the book ‘Way of the Fist Vol. III’ and 10 Skill Points for Tifa.

Once you finish the challenges, you’ll earn some good rewards! PlayStation players can win the ‘Peeress of Pull-Ups’ trophy. If you defeat Jay after beating Andrea, you’ll get Magic Up Materia. And if you win against Jules, you’ll receive a Champion Belt, which increases your HP by 10% and your strength by 5%.
