The Subterfuge at the Abandoned Shrine Quest will begin automatically as you play through Nioh 3. This quest is a key part of the main story set in the Heian Era, requiring Takechiyo to cleanse three magical barriers. Here’s a guide on how to get to the barrier at Yasaka Shrine and beat the boss guarding it in Nioh 3.
Subterfuge At The Abandoned Shrine Quest In Nioh 3
To break the barrier, you’ll need to finish the Subterfuge at the Abandoned Shrine quest. This quest is connected to the main quest called Heian Befouled, and you’ll find it at Yasaka Shrine in Rokuhara.
When you get to the shrine, you won’t immediately see how to get past the barrier. First, talk to Yoshitsune to get him to fight alongside you. Then, go up the stairs, defeating any enemies you encounter. Continue climbing and pass through the archway to reach the rooftops of the smaller buildings.
Jump from the roof southward onto the platform and kick down the ladder. This creates a quick way back to the Shrine if you need it. Continue heading east, and you’ll see another shortcut on the left, but you can’t access it yet. Just go around it and keep exploring.
You can explore this next area at your leisure, or head straight for the large, ice-covered building in the distance to continue the main story. Climb the ladder and jump onto the roof, then turn north and jump down. Continue forward to reach the battleground. Before you start fighting, remember to go back and unlock the shortcut you passed earlier – it’s helpful if you get defeated.
Once you’ve dealt with the initial enemies, the true boss, Kaijwara Kagetoki, will appear. He fights similarly to a regular character, using a mix of close-range and long-range attacks. He utilizes ninja techniques and summons yokai with Soul Cores to aid him in battle. He also employs Onmyo Magic Items to weaken players and boost his own strength. When he reaches about half health, he’ll summon even more yokai and become significantly more aggressive.
Kajiwara frequently uses red attacks, but these can be easily blocked by using Burst Break. Successfully blocking these attacks quickly depletes his Ki, leaving him open to significant damage for a short time. Summoning a player with an Ochoko Cup can make the battle even simpler.
After defeating the enemy and cleansing the barrier, players will receive rewards and finish the “Subterfuge at the Abandoned Shrine” quest in Nioh 3.
