Amazon has announced that Callum Vinson will play Atreus, the son of Kratos, in their upcoming God of War series. The show will begin with the story from the 2018 God of War game, skipping over the earlier games set in Greece. Although some fans are disappointed the series isn’t starting with the original storyline, the 2018 game introduced many new players to the franchise.
Atreus debuted in the 2018 game God of War as Kratos’s son and is central to the game’s story. Though they are father and son, Kratos and Atreus don’t initially have a close bond. Kratos has kept his distance, but the pair are brought together after Atreus’s mother, Laufey, dies. Their relationship changes significantly as they journey together, making the actor who plays Atreus – Sunny Suljic – just as important as the actor who plays Kratos. Suljic’s performance in God of War Ragnarök was even recognized with a nomination for Best Performance at The Game Awards in 2022.
Callum Vinson Will Portray Atreus in Amazon’s God of War Series
I’m so excited about the God of War show on Prime Video, and they’ve just announced who’s playing Atreus! It’s Callum Vinson, and honestly, he’s a fantastic choice. I’ve seen him in a few things already – he was great in Poker Face, Chucky, and Long Bright River. He even played a young Jason Voorhees in a series called Crystal Lake that just finished up! I think playing Atreus will be a really interesting role for him, because it’s unlike anything he’s done before – a young god alongside such an iconic character. I can’t wait to see what he brings to the part!
Fans were surprised to learn that Ryan Hurst will be playing Kratos in the upcoming God of War project. Interestingly, Hurst has been involved with the franchise before, having played Thor in Ragnarök. He’s also well-known for his work in popular shows and films like Remember the Titans, Sons of Anarchy, and The Walking Dead. Christopher Judge, who famously portrayed Kratos in the 2018 and 2022 God of War games, publicly congratulated Hurst on Twitter after the announcement.

Despite some initial concerns about the story’s beginning, fans are generally excited about the actors Amazon has chosen for its God of War series. Max Parker, Teresa Palmer, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Mandy Patinkin will play Heimdall, Sif, Thor, and Odin, respectively. Viewers are now wondering who will be cast as Freya, but Amazon hasn’t revealed that information yet.
It’s hard to predict how the upcoming God of War series will be, but Amazon recently had success adapting Fallout, which just concluded its second season. This new project differs in a key way: Amazon is partnering with Sony instead of Bethesda, potentially influencing the creative direction. While God of War appears to be closely following the game’s story, Fallout created a new story within the existing universe.
