Many popular anime, like My Hero Academia, feature large casts of characters, which often means not everyone gets a well-developed storyline or a satisfying conclusion. While characters like Ochaco Uraraka, Himiko Toga, Shoto Todoroki, and Deku experienced emotionally powerful and fulfilling endings after significant growth, others unfortunately didn’t receive the same attention and their storylines fizzled out.

It’s understandable that not every character gets a perfect ending, and fans generally accept less focus on minor characters. However, it’s frustrating when important characters don’t receive satisfying conclusions to their stories, leaving things feeling unresolved. A good ending doesn’t need to be happy, just meaningful and conclusive for the character’s journey. These characters deserved better conclusions than what the My Hero Academia anime provided, regardless of whether they got a ‘happily ever after’ or not.

Overhaul’s Ending Was Weak and Forgettable For Such a Cool Villain

Overhaul is a great example of a villain who doesn’t need a happy ending – he needs a powerful one. Fans of My Hero Academia don’t want to see him redeemed or find happiness, because someone who abuses others doesn’t deserve that. What Overhaul really needed was an ending that made you think, showing him grappling with his life. He grew up in the Yakuza, rose to the top of the criminal world, and then lost everything – that’s a story with potential for a truly meaningful conclusion.

Overhaul suffered a devastating defeat, losing not only his criminal organization but also his arms and his ability to use his Quirk. While he cried out when Tomura destroyed his arms, Overhaul didn’t show much emotion after that, leaving fans curious about his inner thoughts. Many want to know if he feels resentment, doubts himself, or secretly hopes for a chance at redemption or happiness. A satisfying conclusion would have shown him realizing the consequences of his choices and understanding that his downfall was a direct result of his life of crime.

Overhaul Cut Magne’s Arc Quite Short

In My Hero Academia, some characters didn’t get the chance to have their backstories fully explored before their deaths. While this was somewhat acceptable for villains like Muscular, Moonfish, Mustard, and Mr. Compress, it felt like a loss for Magne, who had a particularly interesting story about finding herself and being accepted for who she was. Like Spinner and Mezo Shoji, who faced prejudice as members of the Heteromorph group, Magne also dealt with issues of societal acceptance, making her death feel more impactful.

Magne wasn’t a shapeshifter, but a transgender woman searching for self-acceptance. While My Hero Academia briefly showed her discussing this with a supportive friend, the anime didn’t explore her story much beyond that. It wasn’t necessary for Magne to live through the series, but she deserved more development as a complex villain before her defeat. Ultimately, her ending feels like a harmful trope – ‘bury your gays’ – and she deserved a more respectful and complete character arc.

In the anime series My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Tensei Iida was a standout character. Fans loved seeing him at his peak as the pro hero Ingenium, showcasing both incredible speed and strong teamwork. His portrayal in the prequel positively developed his overall story, especially impressing the vigilante hero Koichi Haimawari. However, this strong foundation couldn’t fully redeem what many viewers felt was an unsatisfying conclusion to his story in the main My Hero Academia anime.

Tensei Iida’s story ended disappointingly, largely serving to elevate the villain Stain and set up his brother Tenya’s success. While Tensei survived his injuries and made the best of his forced retirement, it felt like a missed opportunity. His sacrifice felt solely to highlight Tenya, and that kind of trade-off doesn’t quite resonate with many viewers. The anime didn’t need to continue Tensei’s career as a hero, but it could have given him more than just a brief appearance. He could have inspired Tenya and Class 1-A, offering his own unique perspective and guidance, similar to the ‘talk jutsu’ technique seen in other series.

While it’s not surprising that a villain like Re-Destro lost a major fight, it’s disappointing he didn’t accomplish more afterward. He was introduced during the My Villain Academia Arc as a powerful rival to Tomura Shigaraki, leading the large and well-equipped Meta Liberation Army. Re-Destro’s Stress Quirk made him a formidable leader, and his group put up a good fight against Tomura’s team, but ultimately, Re-Destro didn’t follow through with his potential.

The story made it seem like Re-Destro and Tomura shared power in the Paranormal Liberation Front, but Tomura was actually in charge. Re-Destro didn’t do much as a leader, and the series didn’t give him a chance to really fight or even show how he felt as his organization crumbled. He was simply sidelined, which was disappointing. He was built up to be a major threat and a rival for Tomura, not just someone who quietly disappears.

Midnight Died a Brave Death But Deserved More Screen Time First

Midnight’s Personal Arc Didn’t Go Anywhere

Midnight, the R-rated hero from My Hero Academia, appeared fairly often in the anime and had scenes with many characters, including Aizawa, Mineta, and Ashido. She even enthusiastically participated in a training exercise where she played the role of a hostage during a mock robbery. While My Hero Academia gave Midnight a reasonable amount of screen time, it didn’t fully develop her character. She was mostly known for her flirty personality, but lacked the depth to make her truly memorable.

Seeing Midnight as a referee at the UA Sports Festival and fighting alongside her against the Paranormal Liberation Front was exciting, but her story felt incomplete. We needed to see more of her life between those moments – particularly her important relationships and inner thoughts – to develop her as a character beyond just a fun, attractive presence. While the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime offered some helpful glimpses into her past, the main My Hero Academia anime should have focused more on fleshing out her personality and motivations.

Edgeshot Gave Up Everything to Save Bakugo’s Life at the Last Minute

The Ninja Hero Didn’t Do Enough Fighting Before His Sacrifice

Edgeshot, the pro hero with a ninja motif, is a good example of a character who had a brief moment to shine and then faded into the background. The anime showed just enough of his unique fighting style – folding his body into threads to defeat powerful enemies like Nomu – but it didn’t explore his potential enough. Even during the most critical battles, when all the heroes were needed, Edgeshot was strangely absent.

The ending for Edgeshot was unusual and maybe even a bit disappointing. He surprisingly used his Foldabody Quirk to save Bakugo, which was cool to see as a creative use of powers, and it highlights the interesting combat system in My Hero Academia. However, it felt strange to have such a skilled hero sidelined as a convenient last-minute rescue device for Bakugo. While it’s possible Edgeshot could return someday, the story leaves that feeling uncertain. Ultimately, My Hero Academia didn’t give Edgeshot enough development or backstory as his role came to an end, leaving his arc feeling incomplete.
