The new MMORPG, Project: Gorgon, has had a rocky start, with many players reporting problems in the town of Serbule. Created by Eric Heimburg and the late Sandra Powers – both well-known for their work on Asheron’s Call – the game first launched in early access in 2018. Despite challenges with funding and the sad passing of Sandra Powers in 2025, the development team at Elder Game persevered and finally released the full version of the game this month.
Since its release, Project: Gorgon has quickly gained popularity on Steam. Player numbers have jumped from the hundreds during its early access phase to over 2,000. The game focuses on letting players freely explore and interact with its world, without relying on traditional quest markers. Project: Gorgon aims to stand out in the competitive MMORPG market by offering a nostalgic, classic gaming experience.
Project: Gorgon Players Struggle Through Lag And Frame Rate Drops
Players on the Project: Gorgon subreddit are reporting significant performance drops specifically in the town of Serbule. One user, Pemocity406, shared that their framerate recently plummeted from a consistent 122 FPS across the game to around 28 FPS in downtown Serbule. They confirmed they haven’t changed any game settings and that the issue isn’t caused by weather effects, as they still achieve high framerates (over 100 FPS) even during rain.
Players have been reporting performance issues in the game. FurlaniJr noticed frame rate drops specifically in Serbule and asked on Reddit if others were experiencing the same problem. Demoth described significant lag and freezing, which made fighting enemies very difficult and led to unfair deaths. The discussions suggest that server problems and recent updates might be the cause, but players are understanding given that the game is developed by a small, independent team.
Image via Elder Game, LLC Wow, it’s been crazy seeing the response to Elder Game! I guess they didn’t expect so many of us longtime fans of Asheron’s Call to jump on board Project: Gorgon. They’ve been dealing with server problems ever since, and quickly added a second server to try and help. But it seems like everyone went to the new server, which just created a different set of issues! They’re already working on a third server to give us all some more space while they fix the problems on the existing ones. It’s a bit rough right now, but it’s awesome to see so much excitement for this kind of game again.
Given the challenges faced during its lengthy development and initial release, it’s remarkable that Elder Game successfully launched Project: Gorgon. The team is now focused on improving performance for the growing number of players, and these issues are expected to be resolved soon. Project: Gorgon should quickly regain its momentum and continue to stand out as a unique and engaging old-school MMORPG.
