The original Pokemon anime is popular for many reasons, and its characters are a big part of that. Ash Ketchum and his partner Pikachu are instantly recognizable heroes, and throughout their adventures, they encounter numerous Trainers. Many of these people join Ash on his journey and become his close, lasting friends.
While many of Ash’s travel companions were well-liked, some weren’t as popular with fans. Despite being generally kind, these characters could often be frustrating. Though a few managed to overcome these annoying tendencies, it didn’t happen consistently.
Brock’s Sudowoodo Could Be Clingy as a Bonsly
The Rock-type Became Much Calmer After Evolving
I just love Bonsly! It’s one of those Pokémon that always surprises people. It looks like a little Grass-type with its bonsai tree shape, but it’s actually a Rock-type! It’s so cheeky – if you even try to water it, it’ll bolt! And it gets even better when it evolves into Sudowoodo. That Pokémon is a master of disguise, pretending to be a tree to avoid fighting. Honestly, it’s such a clever way to stay out of trouble!
I remember when Brock found a little Bonsly in the Kanto region, completely on its own and crying because it was hungry. No one seemed to be around to look after it, so Brock stepped in and became its caretaker. He even took Bonsly with him when he traveled to Sinnoh, and for a while, Bonsly was his only companion. Being a baby Pokémon, Bonsly needed a lot of attention and cried frequently, which could be a bit stressful for Brock. But thankfully, as Bonsly grew and evolved, it became much calmer and even started acting like an older sibling to Brock’s Happiny. It was really heartwarming to see!
Many Fans Criticize Chloe’s Overall Lack of Character Development
Chloe Did Begin To Gain Confidence Thanks to Eevee
Similar to previous protagonists like Serena and May, Chloe begins her journey uncertain about her future goals. However, unlike them, Chloe starts out very practical and focused on realism, which makes her seem distant or cold at first. We also learn that Chloe wasn’t initially a big fan of Pokémon, and she even treated her family’s new Yamper poorly when it first arrived. She later felt bad about this, especially after Yamper ran away.
Chloe truly came into her own, all because of a unique Eevee that refused to evolve – a mystery for Pokémon researchers! With Eevee as her partner, she blossomed into a real Trainer and even pursued a career as a Pokémon Performer. Fans have had varying opinions about Chloe; some feel she didn’t grow enough as a character. While she started as a somewhat frustrating personality, she eventually became much more laid-back and approachable.
Max Can Be Quite the Know-It-All
May’s Brother Often Criticizes Trainers Despite Not Being One

While his sister used to feel pressured to follow in their father’s footsteps and become a Pokémon Trainer, Max eagerly anticipates starting his own journey. He spends a lot of time reading about Pokémon to prepare, and has learned a great deal about them and battling strategies – though mostly from books, not real experience. Fortunately, his sister May cares for him while their parents are away on their adventures, giving him opportunities to learn even more about Pokémon.
Max is a sweet boy, but he sometimes acts stuck-up about his Pokémon knowledge. He’ll even point out mistakes Ash makes in battles, which is ironic since Max hasn’t started his own Trainer journey yet. Despite this, Max really admires Ash and is a big fan of his sister. Brock took Max under his wing, helping him learn about Pokémon and life outside of battling.

Barry Always Rushes Into Everything
This Rival Character Is Legendary for His Impatience
I remember starting my adventure in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum, and immediately meeting a really energetic boy next door. That was Barry, who quickly became my rival! Everyone in town seemed to comment on how restless and impatient he was. He even had this funny habit of threatening to ‘fine’ anyone who didn’t keep up with him. I learned pretty quickly that Barry was so eager to become a Trainer because his dad, Palmer, was one of the powerful Frontier Brains in the Sinnoh region – he really looked up to him.
The anime version of Barry is true to his game personality, but even more excitable. He’s one of Ash’s rivals in the Sinnoh region and briefly travels with Ash as a companion. However, the anime portrays Barry as significantly more impatient and quick to anger, often getting upset over small things. This behavior sometimes embarrasses his Pokémon partner, Empoleon.
Goh Does Not Consider the Importance of Befriending Pokémon
A Trainer Who Cares More About Catching Than Actually Training
Fans and critics often compare Pokémon Trainer Goh to the popular game Pokémon GO. He’s a main character in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, alongside Ash. While Ash wants to be a Pokémon Master through battling, Goh is more interested in catching Pokémon – he actually wants to catch every Pokémon in the world! His biggest goal is to complete the Pokédex and, more specifically, to catch and partner with the rare Mythical Pokémon, Mew.
Goh is determined to catch every Pokémon, but he often overlooks building strong bonds with the ones he captures. Early in his journey, his eagerness to catch Mew leads him to unintentionally upset a Scorbunny who wanted to be his partner. While he eventually does bond with a few Pokémon like Cinderace, they are the exception in his large collection. Ash, on the other hand, prioritizes getting to know each of his Pokémon, which earns him the admiration of fans and others. Unlike Goh’s focus on completion, Ash values the relationships he builds with his Pokémon.
