As a die-hard Death Note fan who has spent countless hours poring over the manga and rewatching the anime series more times than I can count, the news of “Death Note: Killer Within” is nothing short of exhilarating! The last game we got based on this iconic franchise was back in 2008, and it’s been a long, agonizing wait ever since.
The popular manga series “Death Note,” penned by Tsugumi Ohba, and subsequently adapted into a 37-episode anime by Madhouse, is now set to launch a new video game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 entitled “Death Note: Killer Within.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can confirm that I’ve got some exciting news! The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee, as reported by Gematsu, has given us this update. It’s official, Bandai Namco Entertainment is going to publish the upcoming game. Now, if you’re curious about its Chinese title, it goes by “Death Note: Shadow Mission.” But don’t worry, because the English version of the Taiwan ratings board has clarified that it will be titled “Killer Within” in our language!
What Was the Last Death Note Video Game?
Beyond that point, little is understood or disclosed. However, it’s significant to note that the emergence of this game is a major event for fans of the Death Note franchise, as the last title we received related to the property was 2008’s L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap, which follows events preceding the Kira investigation from the original manga. It’s important to mention that this game was exclusively released in Japan, and it concludes the trilogy of Death Note games for the Nintendo DS, with the first installment, Kira Game, debuting in February 2007, and its sequel, Successors to L, following in July of the same year.
It’s likely that the new Death Note game will maintain its previous style of gameplay, heavy with text and reminiscent of graphic novels, as no changes have been announced yet. Interestingly, the trademark filing suggests that Bandai Namco plans to launch the game in both the US and Europe, which could mean long-waiting fans in these regions will soon be able to enjoy a Death Note game with English text.
Discussing the English version of Death Note, it first appeared as a Japanese live-action TV series in 2015. However, a western adaptation was released as a movie titled “Death Note” in 2017, which Netflix distributed globally. Unfortunately, this film wasn’t popular among fans and critics, leading our sister site Game Rant to publish an article this year about the controversy surrounding it.
