Foxhole is a massively multiplayer online game unlike any other, drawing inspiration from World War II. What makes it special is that wars aren’t short events – they can go on for weeks or even months, and the game world is always active. Players join one of two teams, the Colonials or the Wardens, and stay with that team for the entire war. Because each side has its own unique advantages and disadvantages, choosing between the Colonials and Wardens is a significant decision.
How Factions Work In Foxhole
There are two factions in Foxhole, and the Wardens and Colonials are always at war with one another.
How Are The Factions Different In Foxhole?
Besides the fact that the Wardens are blue and the Colonials are green, and they have different visual styles, there are more significant differences between them. Each faction has its own unique history, and they begin the game in different locations – the Wardens usually start in the snowy north, while the Colonials start in the south.
Each faction boasts its own special weapons, vehicles, and gear, giving them unique strengths and weaknesses. For instance, the Wardens excel underwater with a better submarine, while the Colonials dominate the skies with a more powerful aircraft carrier. Sometimes, one side possesses equipment the other simply doesn’t have – like the Wardens’ torpedo bomber versus the Colonials’ dive bomber, introduced in the Airborne update.
Forget about trying to achieve perfect balance – it’s impossible to measure anyway. Just focus on what sounds most enjoyable to you.
Players unlock vehicles and equipment throughout each war by progressing through a tech tree, and they decide which items their faction prioritizes researching first.
When Can You Switch Faction In Foxhole?
During a war, players are required to pick a side and stick with it until it ends. However, when a new war begins, they can choose any side they want.
There are a couple of things to keep in mind when choosing a side. Players can switch factions if they haven’t played for more than 6 minutes in the current battle. After that 6-minute mark, they’re locked in. Also, players below level 5 can switch factions once, just in case they want to join their friends or for other reasons when they’re first starting out.
When you join a regiment, you automatically become part of their faction. If you want to switch factions at the beginning of a new war, you’ll need to join a regiment first. Then, within 6 minutes, leave that regiment using the menu opened with the F1 key. After leaving, you can then switch to a different faction.
Different Shards/Servers
To handle the large number of players, Foxhole uses two separate servers, called shards: Able and Charlie. New players, or those returning after a break, are generally advised to join Charlie.
Everyone faces their own challenges, which we’re calling ‘wars’. These periods of difficulty can vary greatly from person to person. For instance, Able might struggle with something for three weeks, only to face a new challenge shortly after. In contrast, Charlie’s difficulties could last for over a month.
A key feature is that players can select different sides, or factions, on each shard. For example, you could play as a Colonial on one shard (like Able) and then switch to playing as a Warden on another (like Charlie).
Key Factors For Choosing A Faction
The following are the most important factors to consider when choosing a faction in Foxhole.
- Which faction currently has a lower population, meaning shorter queues? Factions at capacity are shown in red.
- Which faction aesthetics do you prefer, including uniforms and vehicle designs?
- Which half of the map do you prefer starting in?
- Which faction rank names do you prefer?
- Which faction are your friends playing as?
- Which faction has regiments you prefer the sound of?
- The war record, which, before the Airborne update, is 69-62 in favor of the Wardens on Able.
- Time zones, as there may be more American Colonials and more European Wardens.
You can also find different uniform options for each side, like scout, medic, paratrooper, grenadier, pilot, and navy outfits. Feel free to browse them and choose your favorites, but keep in mind that some may only be available depending on their specific use in the game.
You can experiment with playing as different sides in the game, switching between them during conflicts, or choose a single side and stay loyal. It’s entirely up to you – there’s no best way to play. Some players prefer to stick with one faction, while others like to switch regularly, and some enjoy playing as a neutral party, constantly changing sides.
The Colonial Faction In Foxhole
The Mesean Republic’s army, known as the Colonial Legion, is easily recognized by its green uniforms. Their military style draws inspiration from Britain, the US, and Italy during World War II. This is reflected in their use of khaki uniforms, specific gun designs, and sleek green tanks and airplanes. Colonial ships are also designed to be light grey and have sharp, angular shapes. The army is known for producing equipment quickly and in large quantities.
Some of the standout Colonial weapons and vehicles are:
- The Argenti Rifle
- The Catara LMG
- The Bomastone Grenade
- The Lunaire Grenade Launcher
- The Spatha Tank
- The Strider Medium Boat
- The V-1 Tyzkalia Heavy Bomber
- The Poseidon Aircraft Carrier

The Mesean Colonials are a truly powerful and determined fighting force, unmatched by any other army. When northern forces crossed our borders, it sparked a conflict that will not easily be extinguished.
If they want to test our legions, let them try.
For the end, is our glory.
Colonial Lore
The Mesean Republic is made up of countries like Mesea, Veli, and Kraunia. Its culture and government draw inspiration from ancient Rome, Greece, and France.
The Mesean Republic prioritizes military strength and sees the state as more important than individual citizens. While details about their religion are scarce, they seem to worship many gods, much like the ancient Romans and Greeks.
The Warden Faction In Foxhole
In the game Foxhole, the Warden faction represents the army of Caoiva and is distinguished by its blue uniforms. Their tanks and ships are a dark grey, evoking a sense of the cold northern regions. With the recent Airborne update, their planes have been painted a lighter blue, aligning them more closely with the faction’s primary color. Warden vehicles generally have a distinctive design, often differing significantly from historical World War I or II vehicles.
Some of the standout Warden weapons and vehicles are:
- The Loughcaster Rifle
- The Booker Assault Rifle
- The Outlaw Tank
- The Nakki Submarine
- The Man-of-War Torpedo Bomber

The Caoivish people once built a powerful empire in the harsh northern lands. However, the recent Great Wars have severely weakened our nation. Attacks from those in the south have left our homeland in ruins.
It’s not just our home they threaten, but our history, our legacy.
Take it back.
Warden Lore
Caoiva isn’t a traditional empire, but rather a gathering of different nations and clans united by the famous Iain Callahan. Their traditions and way of life are inspired by Gaelic and other Celtic cultures. A leader, called an Archon, governs Caoiva, and is almost always chosen from either the Callahan or Mercy families by a council known as the Witan.
The Caoivish people are different from the Mesean Republic; they highly value heroes and famous figures from both the past and present. This is reflected in their place names, like Callahan’s Passage and Mercy’s Wish. Additionally, sun worship is a central part of their culture in this region.
