The Heartopia team has addressed some player concerns about the game’s gacha system, but many fans are still disappointed with the response. While getting rare items in Heartopia can be thrilling, players feel these moments don’t happen often enough. A lot of people believe significant changes are necessary to make the gacha system as good as those in similar games.
Launched initially in China in July 2024, the relaxing multiplayer game Heartopia became available on mobile devices worldwide on January 7th and on Steam shortly after. It quickly gained popularity, exceeding five million downloads and reaching over 66,000 players simultaneously on Steam. The game’s developers, D.G. Guild, intended to create a charming and evolving town, and they’ve largely succeeded in drawing players in. However, some players have expressed dissatisfaction with certain features, specifically those involving the game’s random item system (often called ‘gacha’ pulls).
Heartopia’s Gacha Criticisms Draw Disappointing Response from XD
After repeated criticism from Heartopia players about the game’s gacha system, XD responded directly to at least one player, but it hasn’t satisfied many. A Reddit user, mingmingcat, shared XD’s response, which stated that the odds for getting items in the gacha system are publicly available on the game’s gacha page. They also said they’re listening to player feedback and may use suggestions to improve the game. However, this player, and many others responding to the post, felt the response was dismissive, especially since the original complaint was about receiving very few tickets when getting duplicate items.
Heartopia is a free-to-play game that you can enjoy without spending money, but many players find its customization options for homes and avatars very appealing. However, it’s surprisingly difficult to get items for these customizations without making purchases with real money. While the game does have a system in place to guarantee rewards after a certain number of unsuccessful attempts, players still feel the odds of getting the specific items they want are low, and they often end up with a lot of duplicates.

While the gacha system has received complaints, it’s not the only problem for the game Heartopia. On Steam, the game currently has a 67% approval rating based on over 3,600 English reviews. Many players criticize the game’s performance, saying it runs better on mobile devices than on PC. Others are concerned about the game’s use of artificial intelligence. The developers have acknowledged using AI to create images for jigsaw puzzles and to translate messages in the game’s chat. They’ve stated that no paid content currently uses AI, and they promise to let players know if they add any AI-generated elements in the future. However, this hasn’t stopped some players who strongly oppose AI from voicing their concerns.
The game Heartopia will soon find out if recent worries about its popularity are justified. A major collaboration with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic begins in February. An initial update arrived on February 7th, and the main event starts on February 14th, challenging players to use the Elements of Harmony to restore the Tree of Harmony to its place in Equestria. The event includes collectible rewards – like costumes and special cars – inspired by the ponies from the show. Many fans have already downloaded Heartopia just to get these My Little Pony-themed items.
