A well-known source for Pokemon news has confirmed that at least two older Pokemon games are coming to the Nintendo Switch, ahead of the upcoming Pokemon Day celebration. With Pokemon’s 30th anniversary in 2026, The Pokemon Company has promised a year-long celebration, and rumors have been circulating about big announcements. This news isn’t surprising, as it’s been over three years since Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were released, and many believe the next generation of games, potentially called Pokemon Wind and Wave, will be revealed and launched in 2026.
While the recent Pokémon Super Bowl ad was exciting, it’s probably not the only major news coming for the series. Alongside the ad, the company previewed “Pokémon Day Out and Night Out,” which appears to be a series of live events scheduled for 2026, not a new set of games. Pokémon Day 2026 will likely also feature updates to existing games, such as events for Pokémon Legends: Z-A (featuring Mega Garchomp) and Pokémon GO‘s Kalos Tour. And now, it’s almost certain that classic Game Boy games will be returning on the Switch.
Pokemon FireRed, LeafGreen, and More Classics on Switch in 2026
A reliable source of Pokemon leaks, known as Riddler Khu, recently tweeted a message saying “They will return soon” alongside an image of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. These games, originally released on the Game Boy Advance in the early 2000s, were planned as the first remakes of the very first Pokemon games. With Pokemon‘s 30th anniversary approaching – marked by the original Japanese release date of Pokemon Red and Green – a re-release of FireRed and LeafGreen on the Switch would be a fitting way to celebrate and complete the circle.
Why Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Could Be The Tip of the Iceberg
Nintendo is likely to bring classic Pokemon games to its Switch Online subscription service. Fans have been requesting the original Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles for a while, and recent information suggests they could arrive in 2026. While only two games were specifically mentioned, it would be a great chance for The Pokemon Company to release more of the older classics, potentially over time.

It’s unlikely we’ll see Pokémon from generations 6 and later included anytime soon, especially since many of those Pokémon are already featured in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are also probably off the table, considering Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl already exist. The most likely candidates for inclusion are games from generations 1, 2, and 3.
As a huge Pokémon fan, I’m really hoping we see the older games come to the Switch! It could happen as individual downloads, which seems pretty likely, especially if they’re affordable – maybe around ten to fifteen bucks. There’s also a chance they’ll be exclusive to the next console, the Switch 2, but that feels less probable since this is a celebration of the series’ history. Still, I’d happily buy those classic games again if they were easily available!
Okay, so this leaker, Riddler Khu, has been off sometimes, but usually nails the big stuff. And he’s been hinting at classic Game Boy and GBA games coming to the Switch, which honestly makes a ton of sense. Everyone’s been begging for the original Pokemon games to return! I’m pretty confident it’s not a matter of if they’ll come, but when. And with Pokemon Day 2026 landing on February 27th, that feels like the perfect date for the announcement. Khu said “soon,” and that timing definitely fits!
