In Nioh 3, the Great Shogun of the Heian Era is a Mythical encounter that appears on the Warring States Era map. This Myth involves a request from Tokugawa Ieyasu: players must offer a Candle Dish at a temple honoring Minamoto no Yoritomo, a former shogun.

This guide explains how to start and finish The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth. It will show you exactly where to put the Candle Dish and what rewards you’ll get for completing the quest.

The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth in Nioh 3

You’ll unlock The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth during the main mission “The Battle of Saigagake.” It becomes available immediately after the cutscene where Ii Naotora opens the gate to Saigagake.

Once you see “The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth” in your mission log, go speak with Tokugawa Ieyasu at the very top of Hamamatsu Castle. He’ll tell you he wants to ask for help from Minamoto no Yoritomo, a previous shogun, by leaving a Candle Dish as an offering at Yoritomo’s temple by Lake Sanaru.

If Tokugawa isn’t responding as expected, check the Progress tab for the mission called “The Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth” and select it by pressing Space on your keyboard (if you’re on PC) or the X button (if you’re on PS5). This will make sure the game recognizes you’re trying to advance that part of the story.

Go to the location shown on the map, and you’ll encounter a strong Yokai named Onryoki. You must defeat Onryoki to remove the barrier and continue into the temple.

Once you’ve beaten Onryoki, go inside the temple and search the body lying on the floor. Then, jump down the big hole in the ground. Continue down the stairs and use Enko to cross the Spirit Vein to the other side.

In the final room, you’ll find a small altar with six Jizo statues. Use it to place the Candle Dish.

Near the altar, the Six Jizo statue is actually a disguised spirit. If you try to offer it gold, it will attack! If you can defeat it, you’ll be able to pray to the Six Jizo and earn 50 Jizo Merit.

Go back to Hamamatsu Castle and speak with Tokugawa to finish the “Great Shogun of the Heian Era Myth” quest. You’ll then receive your rewards.
