As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for MMOs and ARPGs, I must say I was disheartened by the initial rocky launch of Wayfinder. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Airship Syndicate has managed to turn the game around in a truly commendable manner. The decision to transform it into a 3-player co-op ARPG, while still maintaining its solo playability, was a stroke of genius.
Initially marketed as a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) game, Airship Syndicate’s Wayfinder faced a storm of server problems and technical difficulties upon its release. This was followed immediately by the shutdown of Digital Extreme’s External Publishing Department, leaving Wayfinder without a publisher and struggling to stay afloat.
Yet, Airship Syndicate isn’t shy about competing, they have aggressively returned with Wayfinder, retracting it from Early Access to revamp almost every system and construct the game anew as a 3-player cooperative Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG). Despite this change, it remains playable solo and eliminates the typical MMO features, particularly the disliked Microtransaction store.
In this latest version, it offers a complete campaign along with “Lost Zones”, which were preserved from the previous form. These are solo or team dungeons that have randomly generated layouts and loot, perfect for grinding resources. Moreover, the 1.0 launch introduces The Crucible, an expansive open-world region to be explored. Inside, you’ll find rare mini-bosses, hidden treasures, and valuable rewards for those who dare to conquer its challenges. To assist you in completing patrol missions and exploring the two Crucible dungeons, it also provides a grappling hook tool.

In the upcoming version 1.0 of Wayfinder, there will be significant changes to talent trees, loot distribution, armor systems, and customization options. This shift emphasizes player development and character building. Notably, there are no microtransactions, meaning all game content such as armor, weapons, and even other players can be earned in-game. The over 3000 items that were previously available for purchase in the cash shop have now been integrated into the game. Additionally, many new items like mounts, skins, and housing decorations have also been added.
By the way, we’re welcoming a new member to our team at launch – the 8th Wayfinder, known as the Arcanist. Given his name, it’s no surprise that he’s a skilled magic-user, and he’ll undoubtedly be an asset to any group of adventurers.
If the previous alterations don’t quite draw you in, the Critical Role Supporter Pack will debut alongside it, blending elements from Wayfinder and Vox Machina, featuring more than 30 unique items inspired by the acclaimed role-playing saga.
Wayfinder 1.0 goes live on PC and PlayStation 5 on October 21.
