As a long-time League of Legends enthusiast, it’s always a bittersweet moment when we hear about layoffs at Riot Games. On one hand, I understand the need for companies to adapt and change, especially when aiming for long-term success. On the other hand, it’s disheartening to see dedicated developers losing their jobs.

Riot Games, creators behind League of Legends, have decided to let go of several employees within their organization. This news was shared in a detailed post penned by one of the co-founders, Marc Merrill.

The layoffs are happening because the company is focusing on ensuring a continuous enhancement of the League experience, both in the short term and the future.

According to Merill, the choice to implement the reductions was challenging, yet it wasn’t primarily focused on reducing the workforce to save costs. Instead, other factors were likely involved in this decision-making process.

He stated, “Our focus is on ensuring we possess the necessary skills to keep League exceptional for the next 15 years and more. Additionally, we aim to address issues promptly.

Though the efficiency of a team matters more than its size, the League team is set to expand further in the future as we progress into the next stage of League.

He mentioned that each terminated employee will receive a severance deal encompassing a minimum of six months’ salary, their yearly bonus, aid in finding new employment, and healthcare coverage.

Merrill expressed gratitude to everyone for their participation and for being a part of our League family, as he concluded his speech.

32 employees from Riot Games, primarily developers for League of Legends, were terminated. This information was confirmed by a Riot representative. It’s worth noting that earlier in the year, Riot Games had to let go of approximately 530 employees.

2024 saw approximately 13,100 positions eliminated within the gaming industry due to Riot’s layoffs, but according to various reports, the actual figure may be closer to 16,000 jobs lost.
