As a gamer who has been following Bandai Namco‘s journey closely, I must say their recent practices have left me quite disheartened. The news about the so-called “expulsion rooms” or “oidashi beya” is not just shocking but also deeply concerning.
Have you encountered the term “Oidashi Beya” previously? Apparently, as reported by Bloomberg, approximately 200 Bandai Namco staff members have come to know this idea quite intimately. Notably, around half of them have decided to leave their positions due to this reason.
In simpler terms, “oidashi beya,” or expulsion rooms, can be understood within the context of Japanese business culture. While Japanese companies strive to retain employees due to various incentives, the law doesn’t prevent individuals from choosing to leave a job. These rooms serve as spaces where former employees can collect their personal belongings in private without causing disruption or embarrassment among remaining staff.
In such a scenario, if a company like Bandai Namco decides to reduce its workforce, it’s situations like these where an environment that encourages resignations becomes crucial. They create conditions that become challenging for employees, leading them to consider leaving the company on their own accord.
Over the past couple of years, Bandai Namco has seen some intriguing gaming releases. The standout title among these is Elden Ring, which has undeniably left an indelible mark on the annals of exceptional video games.
Following the successful launch of Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which sold an impressive 3 million copies within the first 24 hours, Bandai Namco decided to activate what they call “expulsion rooms.
Approximately 200 workers are reportedly transferred there thus far, with around half of them having already departed. The remaining employees continue to stay, presumably due to their hope that monotonous tasks will eventually lead to their resignation. These employees are often assigned work that is largely pointless or nonexistent, with the intention of inducing boredom as a means of encouraging them to quit.
It is now widely recognized that experiencing “boreout” can have significant psychological impacts. In fact, some companies have started to exploit this phenomenon. However, if you believe that having a leisurely day, week, or month at work seems appealing, it’s important to note that feelings of depression and anxiety might offer a differing perspective.
Bandai Namco Responds to Claims of Expulsion Rooms
Bandai Namco has stated that their current work practices are a consequence of terminating projects and simply awaiting the arrival of new job opportunities.
“Our decisions to discontinue games are based on comprehensive assessments of the situation.”
Once news of this practice reached Bloomberg, they got a reply from a Bandai Namco representative.
As a fan, I can tell you that while some team members might have to hold their horses for a bit until the next project arrives, rest assured, we’re always ready and eager to dive into fresh opportunities as they pop up on our horizon.
Despite their recent triumphs, Bandai Namco has been taking a more frugal approach, scrapping some projects and redirecting their focus in response.
The Bloomberg piece outlines various incomplete endeavors, such as a venture that was contracted by Nintendo Corporation.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice the palpable excitement among us, as we eagerly await potential news from Bandai Namco about an upcoming project. It seems like many of us are on tenterhooks, hoping to see something new from this esteemed studio.
From my perspective as a gamer, it’s yet to be determined whether what I’m about to say falls under the realm of acceptable banter or steps over the line into toxic territory. While such language might fly in a courtroom, it doesn’t necessarily resonate well with fellow players.
Although there have been several recent disclosures originating from Nintendo, we’re yet to find any hints about the nature of the secret project they were working on.
