Mewgenics Save Scum Easter Egg Explained

Hidden secrets, often called Easter eggs, have long been a part of video games, rewarding curious players who explore and go the extra mile. But the game Mewgenics has a unique Easter egg for those who repeatedly reload their saved games to prevent losing progress or their beloved cats. It’s shaping up to be one of the funniest and most engaging secrets in gaming this year. Here’s a guide to how to trigger it by ‘save scumming,’ what the Easter egg actually is, and what happens if you keep reloading saves to unlock its ultimate form.

How to Save Scum in Mewgenics

Save scumming is when players repeatedly close and restart a game to avoid negative consequences, like losing progress or characters. For example, in the game Mewgenics, players might force-quit during a battle and then reload to prevent their cats from being defeated.

To retry battles in Mewgenics without losing progress, you can quickly close the game. Just press Alt + F4, or right-click the game icon on your taskbar and choose ‘Close Window’. This lets you avoid failing a run and try the battle again.

Restarting the game should take you back to a previous point, letting you replay the battle or attempt the run you were doing.

If you want to discover the hidden surprise without any spoilers, I recommend stopping here and reloading an earlier save in Mewgenics a few times. I haven’t shown everything about the surprise, but some people might still consider what I have revealed to be a spoiler.

What Is the Mewgenics Save Scum Easter Egg?

When you start using save scumming in Mewgenics, you’ll meet Steven, a character who appears in other games by Edmund McMillen – specifically, The Binding of Isaac and The End Is Nigh, as well as Time Fcuk.

He’ll start by giving you a single warning, but after that, he’ll stop holding back. You’ll have two more interactions with Steven where he issues increasingly harsh warnings. The second time, he’ll temporarily lower one of your cats’ intelligence. If you keep reloading your game to avoid consequences, you’ll eventually reach the final warning and Steven’s ultimate punishment.

After repeatedly reloading your game to try and get a different outcome, Steven will finally tell you he knew what you were doing and that you could have simply asked him to play. Once you start the battle and keep avoiding it, Steven will unexpectedly take control of your cats.

This is a clever way to show how simplifying something can have unintended effects, and it’s a good example of the humor that McMillen brings to Mewgenics.
