This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the entire Resident Evil franchise.
The Resident Evil series has a lot of games – over 20 spin-offs, remakes, and eight main titles – so its story can be confusing, especially for new players. While most Resident Evil games are fun on their own, the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem seems like it will really focus on the series’ complicated history. Even longtime fans might want to review the story before playing it.
While the movie will include at least one scene showing events from the past, most of the story in Resident Evil Requiem is set in October 2026. This means the film takes place 28 years after the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3 in Raccoon City. A lot has happened with the familiar characters in the Resident Evil series during those years.
The Resident Evil series includes seven computer-animated movies, and Capcom generally considers most of them to be official parts of the story.
Leon Kennedy’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Leon Scott Kennedy first appeared in Resident Evil 2 and quickly became one of the most beloved heroes in the entire Resident Evil series, and gaming in general. Starting as a new police officer during the outbreak in Raccoon City, he’s since worked for different parts of the US government. Most recently, Leon was featured in Resident Evil: Death Island, a 2015 CGI movie that bridges the stories of Resident Evil 6 and 7. In the movie, Leon joins forces with Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, and Jill Valentine to stop a dangerous new bio-weapon on Alcatraz Island.
Capcom finally revealed at the 2025 Game Awards what many gamers had long suspected: Leon Kennedy will be back in the next Resident Evil game, titled Resident Evil Requiem. Leon will share the spotlight as a playable character with Grace Ashcroft, and his sections of the game will feature action similar to Resident Evil 4.
Claire Redfield’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Claire Redfield, like Leon Kennedy, first appeared in Resident Evil 2 and most recently in Resident Evil: Death Island. In between those games, she dismantled an Umbrella facility in Antarctica, became part of the TerraSave organization, and worked with Barry Burton and his daughter Moira to stop Alex Wesker.
Chris Redfield’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Village
- In-Universe Date: 2037
- Years After Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Chris Redfield is one of the main characters in the original Resident Evil and has remained a prominent figure throughout the series. After the collapse of the Umbrella Corporation, Chris teamed up with Jill Valentine to form the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA). The BSAA’s mission is to quickly neutralize any bio-weapon threats that emerge. Several years after the events of Resident Evil: Death Island, Chris and the BSAA were dispatched to Louisiana to deal with the Baker family. It was during this mission that he encountered Ethan and Mia Winters.
Following the events of Resident Evil 7, Chris Redfield left his position with the BSAA and led his team, Hound Wolf Squad, to Eastern Europe with the goal of defeating Mother Miranda. He observed Ethan Winters’s ultimate sacrifice to end the threat in the village, and managed to save their infant daughter, Rose. While most of Resident Evil Village is set in 2021, the game’s ending jumps forward to 2037, showing a now 16-year-old Rose Winters under the protection of both the US government and Chris Redfield. This confirms that Chris is still alive eleven years after the events of Resident Evil Requiem.
Jill Valentine’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Jill Valentine, the other main character from the original Resident Evil, has faced incredible hardship. She not only survived the horrors of the Spencer Mansion and the fall of Raccoon City, but also suffered lasting consequences. During a fight with Nemesis in Resident Evil 3, Jill was infected with a unique version of the T-Virus. Capcom explains this is why she still appears youthful in Resident Evil: Death Island, which takes place 17 years later. Between those events, she was also briefly controlled by Albert Wesker.
Ada Wong’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 6
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
Ada Wong is a popular character in the Resident Evil series. She was first hinted at in the original Resident Evil, fully introduced in Resident Evil 2, and became a playable character in the ‘Separate Ways’ scenario of Resident Evil 4. Ada is often portrayed as an anti-hero – a mercenary who frequently betrays others, including Leon Kennedy, though she often ends up saving them. Her most recent appearance was in Resident Evil 6 (2013), where she had to fight a clone impersonating the leader of the Neo Umbrella organization.
Ethan Winters’ Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Village – Shadows of Rose
- In-Universe Date: 2037
- Years After Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Okay, so my time as Ethan Winters in the Resident Evil universe was pretty intense, but not super long. I was the main guy in both Resident Evil 7 and Village. In Village, things got crazy – I had to bring my daughter Rose back to life and then save her from this powerful villain, Mother Miranda. Sadly, I didn’t make it out of Village alive; my mind ended up getting absorbed into this weird fungal network that gave Mother Miranda her powers. But it wasn’t totally the end! In the Shadows of Rose DLC, I got to help my now teenage daughter out inside this mindscape thing. I even had to sacrifice myself again to finally save her from Mother Miranda. It was a wild ride, honestly.
Barry Burton’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil Revelations 2
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
Barry Burton is known for many memorable lines in the Resident Evil series, but he’s only officially appeared in a few games: the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Revelations 2, and one ending of Resident Evil 3. We last saw this former S.T.A.R.S. member in RE: Revelations 2, where he saved Claire Redfield and his daughter, Moira, from Alex Wesker.
Rebecca Chambers’ Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Okay, so Rebecca Chambers is a character who actually debuted before the first Resident Evil game, if you look at the story timeline. I first encountered her as a playable character in Resident Evil 0, alongside Billy Coen. Sadly, Billy hasn’t shown up since, but Rebecca’s popped up in a bunch of other games over the years. Most recently, I saw her in Resident Evil: Death Island – she’s the one who saved Leon, Chris, and Claire with a vital vaccine!
Sherry Birkin’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 6
- In-Universe Date: 2013
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 13
Sherry Birkin was a child when the Raccoon City disaster happened, as her parents were scientists working for the Umbrella Corporation. Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy saved her, and she was raised under government protection. As an adult, Sherry joined the US government’s security division. In Resident Evil 6, it’s revealed that Neo Umbrella is using her G-Virus-infected blood to develop the even more dangerous C-Virus.
Ingrid Hunnigan’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Death Island
- In-Universe Date: 2015
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 11
Ingrid Hunnigan, often referred to as ‘the woman in the chair’, first appeared in Resident Evil 4, providing crucial support to Leon Kennedy as he began his mission in Los Iluminados territory. She’s continued to offer similar assistance in Resident Evil 6 and has also appeared in several of the CGI Resident Evil films, including Death Island.
Albert Wesker’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil 5
- In-Universe Date: 2009
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 17
Albert Wesker is widely considered the most famous villain in the Resident Evil series. He first appeared in the original Resident Evil as a scientist working for the Umbrella Corporation, posing as the captain of the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team. Wesker’s story concluded in Resident Evil 5, where he was ultimately defeated and killed by Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar, who stopped him from releasing a new strain of the Uroboros virus.
Hunk’s Last In-Universe Appearance
- Last Appearance: Resident Evil: Code Veronica
- In-Universe Date: 1998
- Years Before Resident Evil Requiem: 28
I’m a huge fan of Hunk, and it’s amazing how popular he’s become, even though he barely speaks! He first showed up in Resident Evil 2 where he had the dangerous job of taking a sample of the G-Virus from William Birkin for Umbrella. We’ve seen him in a lot of the Mercenaries modes over the years, but it’s cool to know he was actually mentioned in Resident Evil: Code Veronica – there was a note that hinted at his connection to Alfred Ashford’s schemes. It’s a small detail, but it really adds to his story!
