Dragon Ball: 7 Characters Who Completely Ruined the Series

The Dragon Ball franchise has been around for a long time, and while most fans have their favorite characters, there are always a few they really dislike. With so many characters appearing throughout the series, disagreements are common – people get defensive when you criticize their favorites, and often poke fun at those who like less popular ones. It’s hard to find everyone agreeing on anything in such a large fandom, but there are a few characters that the vast majority of Dragon Ball fans seem to universally dislike.

Online and among fans, certain characters are frequently blamed for diminishing the quality of Dragon Ball. These characters are often seen as either irritating or unnecessary, and while opinions differ, many believe they negatively impacted the series.

Champa

Champa, first introduced in Dragon Ball Super, is the God of Destruction of Universe 6. He’s the brother of Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, and the two have a long-standing rivalry. Like Beerus, Champa is incredibly self-assured and doesn’t care much for rules or the feelings of others. He’s determined to win at all costs, and isn’t afraid to use unfair methods to achieve victory. While many characters in the Dragon Ball universe are a bit mischievous, Champa is exceptionally petty and underhanded.

After Champa was introduced, many fans online expressed their frustration with his behavior, pointing out that his childish outbursts and tantrums didn’t seem fitting for a God of Destruction. Unlike Beerus, who carries himself with dignity, Champa often comes across as a comedic character, even though he’s actually quite powerful.

Mr. Satan

When Mr. Satan first appeared in Dragon Ball Z, many viewers assumed he’d be a minor character with limited screen time. However, he’s stuck around much longer than expected, even recently appearing in Dragon Ball Daima, which has frustrated some fans. Despite being wealthy and famous, Mr. Satan is incredibly boastful and self-centered, often exaggerating his accomplishments – claiming he defeated Cell to impress women after his wife passed away, which caused tension with his daughter. While strong for a normal human, he doesn’t possess the incredible powers of the Z Fighters.

Some Dragon Ball fans enjoy Mr. Satan as a funny character, but many others online are still upset about his behavior. Specifically, they haven’t forgotten that he falsely claimed to have defeated Cell. While he does become slightly more likable during the Buu Saga, his frustrating personality and questionable choices continue to make him unpopular with a large part of the fanbase.

Broly

Broly first appeared in the 1993 movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly — The Legendary Super Saiyan and has since become a popular, though sometimes controversial, character among fans. He’s one of the incredibly rare Legendary Super Saiyans, appearing only once every thousand years. The character was created after screenwriter Takao Koyama wanted a villain stronger than anything seen before, and was inspired by Future Trunks’ transformation into a Third Grade Super Saiyan during the Perfect Cell Saga in Dragon Ball Z.

I’ve noticed a lot of debate among Dragon Ball fans about Broly. Since he first appeared, a dedicated group has insisted he’s the strongest character, which has annoyed others. Some just don’t like his simple, brute-force personality, but most agree the biggest problem is that he’s not a very complex character. His backstory feels weak, and he seems obsessed with only one thing: beating Goku. A lot of fans have wished the story would move on from him. But recently, it seems like Broly might still play a role in the upcoming game, Dragon Ball: Age 1000.

Zeno

Grand Zeno, the most powerful being in the entire Multiverse – also called the Omni-King – doesn’t seem very intimidating at first glance, and fans immediately picked up on this. Introduced in Dragon Ball Super, Zeno is known for being apathetic and casually destroying universes without a second thought. While he’s incredibly wise, many fans didn’t like how he’d cheerfully wipe out millions of lives. Overpowered characters are common in Dragon Ball, but it bothered some viewers that even the Gods of Destruction are afraid of him.

I’ve noticed Zeno has a small but dedicated following. People seem to appreciate his simple design, and some have said he reminds them of the original Dragon Ball fanbase – viewers who just want fun action and aren’t too concerned with a complicated story. However, most people I’ve talked to find his childish personality and overwhelming power frustrating. They’d much prefer a character with more depth and complexity.

Chi-Chi

Chi-Chi started out as a fairly likable character in the original Dragon Ball, but opinions shifted after she married Goku. She began as a shy and kind princess, daughter of the Ox-King, but in Dragon Ball Z, she often came across as bossy and controlling. She constantly scolded Goku and criticized Gohan for prioritizing his training. While the traumatic events of Goku’s death and Gohan’s kidnapping certainly affected her, many fans found her constant yelling unpleasant. When Dragon Ball was meant to be a fun escape, few wanted to see a nagging, overprotective mother.

Many fans of Dragon Ball find Chi-Chi frustrating due to her strong personality and tendency to get upset. While she likely has good intentions, her behavior has been a long-standing issue for the community. Fans hoped to see her overbearing, demanding nature toned down in newer series like Dragon Ball Super, but it hasn’t changed. She repeatedly pressures Goku to find work, and her predictable character – often portrayed as a stereotypical housewife – has led to criticism of the author, Akira Toriyama, with some believing he doesn’t write strong female characters. Despite other potentially annoying characters, Chi-Chi is often considered the most irritating.

Babidi

Babidi is widely disliked by Dragon Ball fans, and for good reason. While he did succeed in turning Vegeta evil – a turn of events that ultimately led to Vegeta’s heroic sacrifice – that’s pretty much his only accomplishment. He’s not very bright, doesn’t listen to anyone, and his design is odd, with a huge personality packed into a small body. His elaborate schemes almost never go as planned, and his overconfidence always leads to his failure, as he tries to compensate for his weaknesses with magic.

Letting Buu loose before they could fully control him was a really bad move, and viewers quickly realized Bibidi could have accomplished his aims through other means. It’s possible Bibidi was intentionally written as a frustrating character, but that doesn’t make him any easier to watch.

Ribrianne

Ribrianne is a powerful fighter in the Dragon Ball universe, but being strong doesn’t automatically make her a good character. Introduced in Dragon Ball Super as a member of Universe 2 and leader of the Kamikaze Fireballs, she initially impressed fans with her unique magical girl design and even managed to briefly overpower Vegeta after transforming. However, viewers generally dislike Ribrianne due to her personality and constant focus on finding love.

Ribrianne is completely fixated on love, constantly claiming it’s the source of her fighting strength. Before every battle, she launches into long-winded speeches that many viewers find annoying. She often repeats clichés like “you lack love” or “witness the power of love,” which quickly becomes repetitive. Many felt she received too much screen time for a comedic character, and it would have been better to have used her more sparingly.
