Romeo is a Dead Man, the newest game from Grasshopper Manufacture and the creative mind of Goichi Suda (also known as Suda51), offers a focused single-player story. It also features enjoyable and unusual side activities to keep you engaged.
One interesting tactic is planting “Bastards.” Despite the name, these actually have a helpful and enjoyable function, making your journey through Suda’s newest game a little simpler.
Planting Bastards unlocks new skills and lets you experiment with different ways to play. If you’re unsure how it all works, this guide will help! We’ll cover how to find, plant, and grow Bastards.
What are Bastards?

In Romeo is a Dead Man, Bastards function like powerful special attacks you can summon to fight alongside you. They come in different forms, and since the game focuses heavily on combat, these unique attack options add a welcome variety to how you deal damage.
Once you have a Bastard, getting them ready for battle is easy. You just assign them to a button and then send them into the fight. There are lots of different Bastards to discover and improve throughout the game.
How to Find Bastard Seeds
You can find Bastard Seeds in a couple of ways. They sometimes drop randomly from enemies, and you might even get good ones that way if you’re lucky. You can also discover them at treasure locations hidden on each level.
You can also purchase Bastard Seeds from Shiroyabu, who you’ll find on the ship – this acts as the game’s central hub between chapters. However you get them, collecting new Bastard Seeds is crucial if you want to fully enjoy the quick and exciting combat in Romeo is a Dead Man.
Planting and Growing Bastards
After you get a Bastard Seed, go see Luna on the ship. She’ll let you start planting right away, with plenty of plant beds available from the beginning.
After planting a seed, you can choose to let it grow naturally, or you can pay to have it sprout right away if you don’t want to wait.
Once you’ve successfully grown a Bastard, remember this is a game made by Suda51. You won’t automatically obtain it with a button press; you’ll need to physically dig it up. Then, you can equip it in the menu wherever you prefer.
The Fusion menu adds another layer of fun to the game. It lets you combine two Bastards into a single, potentially powerful unit. Keep in mind that this process permanently removes the original two Bastards, so choose wisely before fusing them!
