Dragon Ball: 8 Transformations Way Stronger Than Super Saiyan

The original Super Saiyan transformation is famous in Dragon Ball, but it hasn’t been the most powerful form for quite some time. Many fans have forgotten that it was quickly surpassed by stronger villains. Akira Toriyama introduced Future Trunks’ Super Saiyan form shortly after Goku defeated Frieza to show that Super Saiyan wouldn’t automatically solve all the heroes’ problems.

The original Super Saiyan transformation, once so powerful, has been surpassed many times over, and Dragon Ball Super has continued to introduce even more powerful forms. By the time of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, most Saiyans, Z-Fighters, and villains have moved on from Super Saiyan, preferring transformations that are unique to them. It seems Super Saiyan no longer has a significant role in the future of the Dragon Ball series.

8. Every Super Saiyan Upgrade is Better Than SSJ1

It’s clear that each new Super Saiyan transformation is more powerful than the original. The Cell Saga brought us Super Saiyan Grade 2 and 3, along with Full Power Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2. Later, the Majin Buu Saga introduced Super Saiyan 3, which was initially only used by Goku and Gotenks. Recently, Dragon Ball DAIMA officially made Super Saiyan 4, previously from Dragon Ball GT, part of the official Dragon Ball story after many years.

Dragon Ball Super introduces several new and powerful Super Saiyan transformations, including Super Saiyan God, Super Saiyan Blue, Super Saiyan Rosé, Super Saiyan Rage, Super Saiyan Blue Evolved, and the Legendary Super Saiyan form seen with Broly. Each of these new forms is significantly stronger than the original Super Saiyan, making the initial transformation feel outdated in comparison.

7. Ultimate Gohan Was the Strongest Form in Dragon Ball Z

Gohan’s power appears boundless. Near the end of Dragon Ball Z, Old Kai helps him reach his full potential, resulting in the Ultimate Gohan form. This transformation allows Gohan to unleash his incredible strength without needing to become a Super Saiyan – Old Kai even states that going Super Saiyan would be ineffective for him. By the series’ end, Ultimate Gohan is definitively the most powerful character without any fusions.

Gohan stops training for a while between the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super series, causing him to lose his ability to fully utilize his Ultimate form. He does regain some of that power by training with Piccolo before the Tournament of Power, but he never reaches the same level as Goku and Vegeta’s God forms. Luckily, Gohan unlocks a new transformation in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero that makes him the strongest Z-Fighter.

6. Golden Frieza Became Stronger Than the Super Saiyans in Four Months

Frieza was born with incredible power, making him the strongest being in the Dragon Ball Z universe, even though he never practiced any fighting techniques. After his initial defeat, he spent time in Hell reflecting on his weaknesses and mentally preparing for a comeback. When he was brought back to life in Resurrection ‘F’, just four months of training with one of his less powerful soldiers was enough for him to go from being weaker than a regular Super Saiyan to reaching a level equal to – or even surpassing – Super Saiyan Blue.

Golden Frieza became incredibly powerful after dying again, training through visualization. He reached a power level comparable to Goku in his Mastered Super Saiyan Blue form, right before the Tournament of Power began. What’s remarkable is that Frieza achieved this God-like power in just four months – something no other character in Dragon Ball has ever done.

5. Orange Piccolo is Finally on Par With Goku & Vegeta

For a long time, Piccolo struggled to match the power of the Saiyans. While the early arcs of Dragon Ball Super weren’t very favorable to him, the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero changed that by making him the central figure. After wishing for greater strength using the Dragon Balls, Shenron not only boosted Piccolo’s power but also gave him a special new form – the Orange Piccolo transformation.

Orange Piccolo is now more powerful than Goku and Vegeta in their God forms. Akira Toriyama designed this new form specifically to put Piccolo on the same level as Goku when he uses Ultra Instinct and Vegeta with Ultra Ego. While the Saiyans will likely eventually become stronger again, right now Orange Piccolo is stronger than any Super Saiyan transformation and restores Piccolo to the power level of Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan.

4. Ultra Instinct is Goku’s Greatest Transformation

As a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, I honestly think Ultra Instinct is the most exciting development since the very first Super Saiyan! It’s such a cool concept – it’s not about powering up with raw energy, but about stripping things back and letting your instincts take over, trusting all the training you’ve done. Watching Goku master it arc by arc since the Tournament of Power has been incredible, and I truly believe it’s going to become the ultimate transformation in Dragon Ball before we know it.

I’m so excited about where Goku’s power has gone! With Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, he’s completely mastered Ultra Instinct – it’s basically like another Super Saiyan form he can switch on whenever he needs to. And then the Granolah Saga blew my mind! He figured out how to combine all his Super Saiyan God forms with True Ultra Instinct. It’s like adding extra layers of power on top of UI’s already incredible speed and reflexes – seriously, it’s a huge boost!

3. Ultra Ego Has the Potential to Make Vegeta Stronger Than Ever

Like typical Vegeta, his Ultra Ego form hasn’t led to a victory yet, but he’s far from helpless. The main issue with Ultra Ego is that it’s new to Vegeta, and it actually needs him to stay transformed and get hit to become more powerful. However, with enough practice, Ultra Ego Vegeta has the potential to surpass Ultra Instinct Goku – and might already be more powerful in terms of raw strength.

Vegeta initially favored Super Saiyan Blue Evolution in Dragon Ball Super, but he’s increasingly focusing on mastering Ultra Ego. While he didn’t get to use Ultra Ego in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero – even when fighting Gohan Beast – it hasn’t been long since the events of the Granolah Saga concluded. As the story moves into the Black Frieza Saga, Vegeta will likely need to depend on Ultra Ego to match Frieza’s significantly increased power.

2. Gohan Beast is the Strongest Z-Fighter Form Right Now

In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Gohan has become the strongest of all the Z-Fighters. During his battle with Cell Max, Piccolo pretends to die, which makes Gohan incredibly angry and unlocks his new “Beast” form. Whis explains that this form isn’t a Super Saiyan transformation or a God form – it’s a completely unique power-up specifically for Gohan.

Gohan Beast seems like a powerful upgrade from his Ultimate form, fully unleashing his hidden strength and anger. In chapter 103 of Dragon Ball Super, Gohan Beast is shown defeating Goku while Goku is using Mastered Ultra Instinct. He then goes on to win a free-for-all battle against Ultra Instinct Goku, Vegeta in his evolved Super Saiyan Blue form, Super Saiyan Broly, Super Saiyan Goten, and Super Saiyan Trunks.

1. Black Frieza is the Most Powerful Form in Dragon Ball Super

Frieza’s power level has become absurdly high. After the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly movie, he secretly trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber for ten years. This allowed him to evolve his Golden Frieza form into Black Frieza, becoming strong enough to defeat Gas, Goku (in his Ultra Instinct form), and Vegeta (with Ultra Ego) with incredible ease – all within just a few chapters of the Granolah the Survivor arc.

Frieza is now the most powerful being among mortals in Dragon Ball Super, and his new ‘Black Frieza’ form might even be strong enough to defeat Gods of Destruction. No Super Saiyan transformation, not even the power shown by Broly, can compare to Black Frieza, who previously surpassed Golden Frieza. The upcoming Black Frieza arc promises to be the Z-Fighters’ toughest battle yet.
