How to Make and Use Explosives in The Planet Crafter

How to Make and Use Explosives in The Planet Crafter

As an experienced gamer with countless hours spent navigating the vast and mysterious terrains of various open-world games, I must say that “The Planet Crafter” has certainly caught my attention. The intricate mechanics and the strategic use of explosives to progress through the game is a refreshing change from the usual run-and-gun action.

In The Planet Crafter, various hindrances bar access to specific regions. For instance, there are ice barriers that dissolve as the terraforming process advances, and elevated platforms accessible only after colossal vines sprout during the Tree phase.

In simpler terms, rock walls are another type of barrier you’ll encounter, and you can demolish them by creating and utilizing explosives. As you progress, you’ll be able to construct a Strong Explosive that will aid in conquering The Planet Crafter. However, until then, these smaller explosives can assist you in accessing specific areas of the map.

How to Unlock and Craft Explosives

Unlocking explosives involves deciphering blueprint microchips using a blueprint reader. The order in which these microchip items become available is somewhat unpredictable, though you’ll typically gain access to explosives after decoding between 30 and 33 chips. This could happen fairly early in the game if you thoroughly explore the map, but one of the necessary ingredients for explosives is a late-game item. The ingredients needed are:

  • 2 Explosive Powders
  • 1 Circuit Board

As a keen player, I’ve found that obtaining explosive powder becomes accessible once you construct your Biolab. However, circuit boards prove more elusive; here are a couple of strategies I’ve employed to accumulate them.

  • Wait for the recipe to unlock at 160 GTi.
  • Unlock and craft the Deconstruction T2 microchip. This allows you to deconstruct technical wrecks, which always produce a circuit board.
  • Recycle spare access cards from procedural wrecks.
  • Check random chests after reaching the Insects terraformation stage.
  • Some of the orb robots in the Planet Humble DLC contain circuit boards.

After gathering all necessary components, you could either assemble explosives within the biological lab yourself, or utilize an automated constructor device to produce them on your behalf.

How to Set and Detonate Explosives

After creating them, you can transport explosives as if they’re ordinary items in your inventory. But, to set them off, you must perform a particular action.

  1. From the inventory screen, interact with them like you would with a consumable. This is the right mouse button by default. This will cause the explosive to drop to the ground in front of you.
  2. Take a moment to step away from the explosive, since it may be stuck up against your body. If the explosive drops too far away from where you want it, use the deconstruction tool to disarm it and recycle the materials. You’ll need to rebuild the explosive at the biolab, but you won’t waste any resources.
  3. Interact with the armed explosive (default is the left mouse button). This starts a five-second timer.
  4. Get a safe distance away from the explosive. It won’t wipe out all your health in one blow, but standing too close to an explosion still isn’t healthy.

Always bear in mind that explosives are designed to target specific types of rock. They won’t create new openings in landscapes, nor will they function on ice walls or closed doors within wrecked structures. The rocks that can be destroyed have distinctive brown coloring with black and orange cracks, often obstructing certain paths across the main map and appearing in randomly generated wrecks.

Explosives on Planet Humble

As an enthusiast, I’d like to share that the Planet Humble DLC offers a refreshing twist compared to the original game. Instead of waiting for the usual number of blueprint microchips to unveil a new recipe, you get the exciting opportunity to discover explosives (and potential targets for them) much sooner in this expansion!

On Planet Humble, all visible wreckages are remnants from a solitary endeavor by a competitive corporation to transform the planet. Despite their efforts being unsuccessful, you can spot remnants of their transport vehicles strewn across the terrain. Notably, these vehicles were carrying explosives intended to expose hidden resources. Interestingly, each cargo crate on these transports contains a set of three explosives.

You can utilize these explosives to break open geodes, which are round orbs found in various parts of the map. Inside these geodes lie valuable resources such as iridium, uranium, osmium, and super alloy, along with rods made from the same materials that are usually quite valuable. Each rod is equivalent to nine times the standard amount of the material, and recipes for super alloy rods and osmium rods won’t become available until midgame.

On Planet Humble, there are no delicate rock formations, making the geodes an ideal target for your explosives. While you may come across rock piles in damaged procedural structures, by that time, you’ll often find unused explosives in crates. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to save your explosives for future use; instead, detonate them on geodes as soon as possible.
