Bungie’s new multiplayer shooter, a reimagining of the classic game Marathon, will be released in less than a month. As the release date nears, the developers have been increasing their promotional efforts and showing off more of the game.
Sony recently showcased Marathon at their February 2026 State of Play event. The new trailer highlighted the beautiful environments of the Tau Ceti IV setting and revealed more about the story. It suggests the colony was abandoned after an AI system failed, leading to its destruction.
During the recent State of Play presentation, Bungie revealed that players will get a chance to try out Marathon in a free preview weekend called Server Slam. This preview will run from February 26th to March 2nd, just three days before the game officially launches on March 5th.
Marathon will be featured during the Steam Next Fest, running from February 23rd to March 2nd. This test period suggests Bungie is preparing to publicly release Marathon after gathering feedback from its alpha test in mid-2025, which received a mixed response.
Marathon’s Server Slam Explained
The upcoming Server Slam for Marathon will be similar to a public beta test, like those Bungie has done with games like Destiny. This will give players on most platforms a chance to try out Marathon before it officially releases and provide feedback to help improve the game.
Your progress in the Server Slam will continue when Marathon officially launches! Players who finish the first mission during the test will get a special emblem showing they were among the first to play, plus a Standard Arrival Cache with cosmetic items, cores, mods, and weapons.
During the Server Slam, players who reach level 10 will receive an Enhanced Arrival Cache. Reaching level 30 unlocks an even better Deluxe Arrival Cache, which contains cosmetic items, resources like cores and mods, weapons, and a special Deluxe Base Backpack.
Bungie is letting everyone try out Marathon with a free preview weekend, called Server Slam, beginning February 26th.
While the full experience shown in the Marathon preview won’t be available in the Server Slam, players will still be able to explore two zones, complete initial missions for five different factions, and choose from five of the six playable Runner characters.
I’m so excited for Marathon to launch in early May! When Season 1 kicks off, we’ll finally get to explore two new zones – Outpost and Cryo Archive. Plus, they’re adding the sixth Runner Shell, the Thief, and letting us fully level up all six factions. And the best part? Ranked mode is coming during the first season, which is going to be awesome!
PlayStation Plus members participating in the Server Slam will receive special weapon charms inspired by Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Players on Steam and Xbox will also get exclusive charms, which will be announced soon.
