World of Warcraft Officially Adds Housing Decor To the Cash Shop

Good news for World of Warcraft players! The game now includes Hearthsteel, a special currency just for housing, and the first two decorative items available for purchase with real money. This is the first time you can buy housing decorations directly with money, and the developers have hinted there will be more to come.

Players can now get personal housing in Azeroth! The feature is available for early access with Patch 11.2.7 and will be fully released in the pre-expansion update for World of Warcraft: Midnight. As with many new features in World of Warcraft, Blizzard will be offering unique decorations for your home through the in-game store. These items will be purchased using Hearthsteel, a new premium currency.

Housing Decor Now Available At the World of Warcraft Cash Shop

The first decorations for player homes in World of Warcraft are now available in the in-game store! You can buy adorable stuffed animals – a Beloved Lion Plushie for Alliance characters and a Beloved Wolf Plushie for Horde characters – to personalize your space. Each plushie costs 100 Hearthsteel, or you can purchase a bundle with four of each animal for 500 Hearthsteel.

Just like with other decorations, if you want to have more than one of these items in your house, you’ll need to buy extra copies.

In World of Warcraft, 100 Hearthsteel costs $1. Because of this, the Beloved Lion and Wolf Plushies are already affordable, but buying them together as a bundle saves players $3 compared to buying eight of the decorations separately.

Hearthsteel, the in-game currency for a certain game, is different from currencies in games like Diablo 4. Unlike those, it doesn’t offer any extra benefits for buying in bulk. This might seem strange, but it’s actually a positive design choice. It means there’s no advantage to buying a large amount of Hearthsteel all at once – buying 100 is just as good a deal as buying 500, 2,500, or even 10,000.

What To Expect From Hearthsteel in World of Warcraft: Midnight

The in-game shop for World of Warcraft currently has a couple of decorations available, but many more are on the way. Data from the World of Warcraft: Midnight beta reveals a total of 19 decorative items, including the recently added plushies. These items have a cherry blossom and garden gnome theme. Plus, the latest beta build introduced new Alliance and Horde doormats, bringing the total number of discovered decorations to around 21.

  • Cherry Blossom
    • Chair
    • Gazebo
    • Hanging light
    • Shelf
    • Tree (with and without pond)
    • Window
    • Wreath
  • Spring/Garden Gnome
    • Bird bath
    • Chair
    • Fountain
    • Garden gnome statue
    • Painted eggs (garden gnome, blue, purple)
    • Trellis
    • Wall lamp
  • Alliance/Horde
    • Beloved Lion Plushie
    • Beloved Wolf Plushie
    • Alliance Doormat
    • Horde Doormat

Considering the game has more than 1,000 decorative items, less than 1% of them will be available for purchase with real money.

Although some decorations might be expensive, these new plushies give us a good idea of the lowest price fans will pay for housing items. For comparison, the least expensive furniture in Final Fantasy 14’s cash shop usually costs $5, not including sales. FF14 has a larger variety of items and doesn’t use a secondary currency like Hearthsteel, but it looks like World of Warcraft’s housing decorations will be more affordable overall.

Despite Blizzard’s promises that the in-game store wouldn’t sell items that affect core gameplay or offer exclusive versions of familiar content, the addition of Hearthsteel has still received criticism. It remains to be seen whether this criticism will continue or if Hearthsteel will become a bigger issue for Blizzard, but one thing is certain: the World of Warcraft cash shop has fundamentally changed.
