Overwatch Fans Might Have Just Figured Out One of Overwatch’s Biggest Mysteries

Players of the game Overwatch think they’ve discovered that the Chernobog program is the one pulling the strings behind a major in-game mystery, known as The Conspiracy. They believe a character named Emre was crucial to uncovering this connection, potentially linking the current mystery to some of the game’s earliest storylines.

On February 10th, Overwatch began a fresh start with the release of Season 1: Conquest, titled Reign of Talon. This update introduced Emre Sarioglu, a new hero who specializes in dealing damage and has a complex past set in the world of Overwatch. He was once a member of Overwatch, but left and now works with Talon, though his reasons remain a mystery.

Chernobog God Program AI May Still Be Active in Overwatch

The newest hero in Overwatch’s Reign of Talon Season 1 has a surprisingly complex backstory. As discovered and shared on Twitter by The Omnic Reporter, the hero Emre’s official biography on the Overwatch website appears as a random sequence of letters and numbers. However, a dedicated fan named Shax managed to crack the code. They discovered the message actually reads “WARNING: CHERNOBOG-BYPASS INITIATED” after translating it from Finnish.

As a big Overwatch fan, I always found the story of Chernobog fascinating. It was basically a super-advanced AI, like a god-program, created by humanity to keep the world safe. But after the Anubis program went haywire and started the Omnic Crisis, everyone got scared Chernobog would do the same thing. So, governments shut it down. The really sad part? Before they did, Chernobog printed out tons of instructions for keeping things secure without it, and its last message was just… heartbreaking. It simply said, “I understand. I’m sorry.” It’s a really poignant little detail that shows how aware the AI was.

Shax’s findings hint that the God program might still be running, but it seems far more sinister than previously believed. The backstory revealed in the Overwatch comic “Search and Destroy” showed Emre acting against his will, leading him to attack his friend and coworker, Freja. The recent short story, “Another Life,” continued this thread, with Emre recalling memory loss after leaving Overwatch. Now, a strange force is making him follow orders he doesn’t understand, and if he resists, it takes control of his mind through the implants in his system – like when he first encountered Freja again, or when he uses his Ultimate ability in Overwatch.

Emre, Chernobog, And the Overwatch Eye “Conspiracy”

If the character controlling Emre is Chernobog, it could significantly expand the backstory of Overwatch. This idea stems from the distinctive eye design on Emre’s armor – a red, stylized eye with three dots above and below it. This symbol is strongly linked to a long-standing fan theory and mystery within the Overwatch universe, often referred to as “The Conspiracy.”

The Conspiracy first appeared in Sombra’s story as a powerful, shadowy group connected to organizations like Talon, Overwatch, Volskaya Industries, and LumeriCo. For nearly ten years, very little was known about it, although a story featuring Soldier: 76 and Sombra suggested The Conspiracy was responsible for the attack that destroyed Overwatch headquarters. Now, it seems Emre is being forced to work for them, targeting satellite control centers – which would be valuable to the Chernobog program.

Everyone believed the powerful God programs were shut down, but if Chernobog has been secretly active and manipulating events, it drastically changes things. We still don’t know what the Conspiracy is planning, but if Chernobog is behind it, they might try to start another Omnic Crisis, or even reactivate other God programs like Anubis, Macaria, and Xibalba. This could also involve whatever entity controls the Gwishin, the dangerous robots D.Va and MEKA Squad fight. It’s unclear exactly what’s happening, but this discovery could lead to exciting new stories in the world of Overwatch.
