During February’s State of Play presentation, Acquire and Shueisha Games revealed Yakoh Shinobi Ops, a stealth-action game designed for four players to enjoy together on the PlayStation 5.
Founded in Japan in 1994, Acquire is a veteran video game developer. They first gained recognition in 1998 with Tenchu: Stealth Assassins for the original PlayStation, a game often credited with establishing the modern stealth genre. For many years afterward, Acquire focused on the Tenchu series and other games featuring ninjas and samurai, including Way of the Samurai, Shinobido: Way of the Ninja, and Samurai Western. More recently, they’ve collaborated with major publishers, co-developing Octopath Traveler and its sequel with Square Enix, and creating Mario & Luigi: Brothership with Nintendo.
A New Stealth Game from the Studio Behind Tenchu has Been Announced
Acquire is back with Yakoh Shinobi Ops, a new four-player cooperative stealth action game recently revealed at the PlayStation State of Play. The game’s announcement trailer showed a team of four ninja sneaking through a palace from a top-down view, using their skills to avoid detection and overcome challenges. The trailer also hinted at dangerous monsters that will hunt players throughout the levels.
The reveal trailer for Yakoh Shinobi Ops offered a first look at the stealth game, but Makoto Hayashi from Shueisha Games shared more details on the PlayStation Blog. Hayashi emphasizes that teamwork is crucial for success in Yakoh Shinobi Ops. Players will control a four-person team and must coordinate to identify enemy movements, eliminate dangers, and achieve mission goals. The game features a variety of shinobi characters, each with a special skill – like smoke bombs for cover, grappling hooks for reaching high places, and firecrackers to distract enemies. To complete missions quickly and effectively, players will need to combine these abilities, revive fallen teammates, help each other find good positions, and interact with the environment. Because each player has a limited field of vision, clear communication is also essential.
In Yakoh Shinobi Ops, missions are divided into two parts. First, players work as a team to sneak into a location and complete goals. Then, they must escape within the time limit while avoiding detection. While infiltrating, players can easily surprise guards, but during the escape, guards are on high alert and actively searching. Leaving a teammate behind significantly lowers the mission rewards. Throughout both phases, players are pursued by powerful, undefeatable enemies called ‘Pursuers,’ forcing them to rely on stealth, hiding, and quick escapes to survive. Successfully completing missions unlocks better equipment, allowing players to create customized gear setups for each match.
Fans will have to wait until 2027 to play Yakoh Shinobi Ops. When it’s released, the game will be available on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam.
