
In the challenging tactics game MENACE, where even a single bullet can be deadly, it’s natural to want to give your squads the strongest armor and equip your soldiers with powerful, high-caliber weapons to deal with heavily armored enemies. However, both using and defending against armor comes with trade-offs. If you don’t fully understand how armor functions in MENACE, you could end up hurting your own team by using your equipment poorly. This guide will explain the armor system in detail and offer strategies to help you maximize both your team’s survival and their ability to defeat even the most heavily protected opponents.
MENACE Armor Mechanic, Explained
In MENACE, armor functions like extra health, allowing units to potentially avoid damage from attacks. Here’s how the armor system works with these stats:
- Armor: Overall Armor value that determines the percentage chance that a shot is going to get absorbed. If a weapon’s Armor Penetration stat exceeds Armor value, then shots will always penetrate.
- Armor Durability: The total health of a unit’s armor. Absorbed shots will reduce Armor Durability, negatively affecting overall effective Armor value. This is matched against a weapon’s Armor Damage stat.
Armor is strongest when it first takes damage. However, it doesn’t last forever – eventually, it will wear down, leaving your units unprotected.
When you shoot at enemies with body armor, you’ll see their armor value (the grey bar above their health) decrease with each hit. However, they won’t actually take damage until your shots break through that armor. This also applies to your own soldiers – armor protects them from taking direct health damage.
The entire MENACE armor system also plays with weapons via two stats:
- Armor Damage: Dictates how much damage successful weapon hits do to armor. Shots that penetrate armor do not deal Armor Damage.
- Armor Penetration: Determines the chance for shots to penetrate armor. If Armor Penetration meets or exceeds a unit’s effective Armor value, they are guaranteed to penetrate.
You don’t always need weapons that directly cut through armor. Instead, you can focus on weapons that quickly destroy armor’s health, or those that deal consistent damage over time, gradually breaking it down.
Currently, it seems like a hidden game mechanic affects how much damage weapons deal to very heavily armored units like tanks. These units seem to resist damage from smaller weapons more effectively than lightly armored targets like infantry or alien chitin. This means weapons that are good at piercing armor are still the best choice against tough enemies.
Tips
- Having a dedicated anti-armor/tank hunter squad will greatly improve your overall effectiveness against vehicles and large armored units.
- Before attempting to strip the armor off infantry that have the Counter-Fire ability, make sure your target is suppressed and that your own units are in good cover. Otherwise, Counter-Fire will do serious damage to your troops.
- Weapons like the Crocodile Anti-Materiel Rifle are mostly good for taking out lightly-armored vehicles and walkers. Against heavier units like tanks, these weapons are best used to destroy modules/parts instead of outright eliminating such targets.
