Surgent Studios’ Game Division on Notice for Redundancy Amid Funding Concerns

As a dedicated fan who has followed Surgent Studios since their inception, this latest news is truly disheartening. The passion and dedication of the team behind Tales of Kenzera: ZAU were evident in every facet of the game, making it a unique and memorable experience. The fact that they are now facing uncertain times due to funding issues is a bitter pill to swallow.

Surgent Studios, responsible for the latest Tales of Kenzera: ZAU, has shared a troubling update via social media. They stated that their games division is temporarily shutting down and the staff have been warned about potential layoffs, as the financial future of the studio remains unclear.

This news comes just north of eight months after Tales of Kenzera: ZAU was released by Surgent.

What Comes Next

On Twitter, Surgent Studios posted the following message:

For the time being, we’ve chosen to pause the Surgent games division operations as we seek financial backing for our upcoming venture. Regrettably, this means we have issued a layoff notice to our team during this transition period.

The entire team at Surgent poured an immense amount of effort into crafting Tales of Kenzera: ZAU – a game that genuinely reflects their emotions. Their fervor, imagination, and commitment are simply astonishing.

There are still a couple of exciting updates coming down the pipeline for ZAU.

But, for now, we have a message:

Our group has designed a preliminary model for an innovative undertaking. This project is grittier, moodier, and more visceral compared to our initial game, yet it continues to embody ZAU’s intense battle sequences and rich cultural context. We are currently seeking a collaborator.

The post then goes on to direct potential partners to Surgent Studios’ contact page.

This year, I had a chat with Abubakar Salim, co-founder of Surgent Studios, who played a significant role in establishing the company. His personal experiences formed the basis for the storyline of the character ZAU.

Regrettably, it’s not the first instance where the studio has faced job cuts. Back in the summer, Surgent experienced a round of dismissals.

It’s unclear at present how many team members could be impacted if these redundancies go ahead.
