The end of Super Sentai is mainly to create space for new superhero series. However, fans worry that no new show will have the same impact as Super Sentai, which is a hugely important part of superhero history. This also has many concerned about the future of its related American series, Power Rangers. Fortunately, Disney+ is reportedly planning a fresh reboot of Power Rangers, expected to premiere around 2026.

Power Rangers originated from the Japanese show Super Sentai. While Power Rangers is based on Super Sentai – essentially a dubbed version – it includes some changes to the story and characters. Typically, Power Rangers simplifies the plot and tone to be more suitable for children, which has often resulted in Super Sentai receiving better reviews.

Beyond the costumes and overall story of each season, Power Rangers heavily relies on action footage from the Japanese show Super Sentai. While the storylines often differ, the fight scenes are almost always taken directly from Super Sentai. Whenever the Power Rangers transform, the show is usually using pre-existing footage. Occasionally, characters are reimagined – like Anubis Cruger – but this doesn’t happen very often.

While some seasons were stronger than others, Super Sentai has 49 seasons under its belt and is truly woven into the fabric of Japanese pop culture. It’s constantly referenced and reimagined, but honestly, I don’t think anything will ever quite recapture the magic of the original series.

Toei has decided to end Super Sentai to focus on new shows. While this has caused a lot of debate, many feel it’s a good move – it’s better to finish a series while it’s still popular. Some fans believe Super Sentai had a lot of life left in it, but Toei has hinted that a revival isn’t impossible.

As a long-time Super Sentai fan, it’s a little strange seeing our usual time slot taken by this new show, Project R.E.D.!
