Early in God of War: Sons of Sparta, you’ll start finding patches of thorns blocking your way. Don’t worry – when you first encounter them, you won’t have a way to get through. But, like in many adventure games, you’ll eventually find a solution. This guide will show you how to get the Evergreen Flame, a special ability that lets you burn away the thorns in God of War: Sons of Sparta.
How to Get Past Thorns in God of War: Sons of Sparta
In God of War: Sons of Sparta, you’ll need to obtain the Evergreen Flame, the second Gift of Olympus, to overcome the thorn barriers. This item unlocks two new magical attacks you can use.
- Volatile Kernel: A small ball of flame that explodes on impact with an object or enemy. Costs 15 Magic.
- Hearth Rain: A shower of incendiary bombs that incinerate enemies.
For the sake of this guide, the Volatile Kernel ability will be the main focus.
How to Unlock the Evergreen Flame:
Similar to how you get the Solar Slingshot, you’ll find the Evergreen Flame by exploring a temple dedicated to one of the gods. Specifically, you’re looking for the Temple of Hestia, which is located in The Great Cistern, right below the city of Sparta. You’ll need to defeat the first boss, Ioke, before you can reach it.
When you go inside The Great Cistern, go down until you find a tall elevator shaft. At the bottom of the shaft, walk east, and you’ll come to the Temple of Hestia.
When you get to the Temple of Hestia, enter and talk to the woman by the central pillar. She’ll activate the Evergreen Flame.
How to Burn Thorn Barriers:
After you get the Evergreen Flame, you can destroy the Thorn Barriers by aiming at them with L2 and then firing with R2. You might need to adjust your aim slightly depending on where the thorns are. As long as the flame explodes close enough, it will burn the barrier away.
More Uses for the Evergreen Flame:
The Evergreen Flame isn’t just for combat – you can also use it to light lanterns and braziers throughout the game. Lighting these braziers can help you solve puzzles for quests or even uncover hidden treasure. The process is the same as burning away thorns or setting fire to flammable objects – just aim and fire!
To cast Hearth Rain, press and hold the R2 button while pressing triangle. This creates a widespread rain of fire that damages almost all enemies on the screen. Be aware that this powerful attack requires a large amount of magic.
Upgrading the Evergreen Flame:
To make the Evergreen Flame stronger, you’ll need to find specific items and go back to the Temple of Hestia. At the temple’s central pillar, you’ll discover you need something called the Eternal Bale. We haven’t located this item yet, but it’s key to empowering the Flame. We’ll update this guide with more details once we’ve found the Eternal Bale and figured out how to use it.
We’re still playing through God of War: Sons of Sparta. We’ll keep this guide updated with details on how to improve the Evergreen Flame as we discover more.
