Okay, so everyone’s really digging the main thing in this game – the battles. It’s turn-based, but it’s not just about attacking. You actually fold the battlefield – like, the paper it’s drawn on – to move your units and stuff around. It’s a really clever puzzle element baked right into the combat. It sounds simple, but the developers, ManduPod, have really gone all-out with it, adding a ton of little details. One player, Falling like Gravity on Steam, said combat is surprisingly deep, and it feels so good when you finally figure out a tricky solution. It’s super satisfying!
Okay, so the combat in Cartapli is actually really interesting because of how you manipulate the battlefield. You can fold the paper to make things shorter, which means I can get into attack range faster, or even trap enemies! There’s also different terrain that throws new challenges into the mix. When I finish a level, I get rewards I can use to upgrade my character, letting me get stronger and build a playstyle I like. Those upgrades carry over between runs, which is cool – it’s the main way the game lets you progress even when you fail. The core combat feels like a familiar strategy RPG, but the paper folding really makes it stand out and feel unique.
More Cartapli: Fold Quest Content Is Coming
The current version of Cartapli: Fold Quest offers about one to three hours of free gameplay spread across two acts. The first act, “Grandpa’s First Tale: The Master of the Forest,” takes place in a forest and features a boss called the Hedgehog King. The second act moves to a desert, culminating in a battle against the Timid Desert King. Both acts have unique enemies with different abilities. In a recent Steam update, the developers at ManduPod announced they’re working on more content, but haven’t given a specific release date. The game is designed so future acts could be paid, or the developers could switch between free and paid updates. It’s currently unknown if they plan to charge for future content, or if the game will be released on other platforms beyond its current release.
While most Steam reviews for the game are positive, complaints generally aren’t about the story itself, but rather how short the game feels and whether it feels fully developed. Several players who tried it early on said Cartapli was too brief. One user even described it as more of a polished demo than a complete game. Despite the limited content, many players still find it replayable. Cartapli: Fold Quest isn’t the only recent success for Jungle Game Lab on Steam. Their cozy cyberpunk game, D1AL-ogue, has also been well-received, earning a “Very Positive” rating with almost 900 user reviews since launching on February 5th.
