Yet Another WWE Video Game is Shutting Down

The arcade-style fighting game WWE 2K Battlegrounds, which launched in 2020 to a largely negative reception, will no longer be available later this year. Developed by Saber Interactive Spain and published by 2K, the game was originally released on PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Google Stadia.

Following a period of doing well, 2K released the poorly received WWE 2K20 in 2019. The game was met with such strong negative feedback that 2K essentially paused the series. Instead of releasing WWE 2K21 the next year, they chose to take more time developing the next main game to make sure it was better. While there wasn’t a new main WWE 2K game in 2020, WWE 2K Battlegrounds was released as an alternative.

Unlike the more realistic WWE 2K games, WWE 2K Battlegrounds is a fast-paced, cartoonish experience with wild arenas and over-the-top moves. Though some enjoyed its unique style, others found it lacked depth. Despite the mixed reactions to the game, it’s disappointing to hear that WWE 2K Battlegrounds will no longer be available online later this year. If you’re hoping to play online, remember that WWE 2K Battlegrounds is shutting down on July 9, 2026, after which all online features will be removed. And unfortunately, there’s more bad news coming.

When is the WWE 2K Battlegrounds ServerShutdown Date?

  • July 9

The online services for WWE 2K Battlegrounds are ending, and the game will also be removed from digital stores. If you want to own the digital version, you’ll need to buy it before February 20th, as it won’t be available to purchase digitally after that date. While you’ll still be able to play the game if you buy it before then, the online features will stop working on July 9th. Physical copies of the game will still be available.

While the recent shutdown of WWE 2K Battlegrounds is notable, it’s not the first WWE 2K game to lose online support. Most WWE 2K titles have had their online features discontinued after a relatively short time. Even the newest installments, WWE 2K24 and WWE 2K25, have announced dates when their online services will no longer be available.

Other WWE 2K Games Are Also on the Chopping Block

The online servers for WWE 2K24 will be turned off on March 31, 2026, and WWE 2K25’s servers will follow a year later, on March 31, 2027. While 2K has sometimes kept online features running longer than planned, fans shouldn’t expect these dates to change. Because the main WWE 2K games are more popular and heavily rely on online play, their server closures will likely be more impactful than the shutdown of Battlegrounds, though it’s always disappointing when any game’s online services end.

Good news for WWE 2K fans: a new game is coming soon! WWE 2K26 will be released on March 13th and includes a special Showcase mode focused on CM Punk, improvements to existing game modes, an updated roster of wrestlers, and new match types. However, like other WWE games from 2K, it’s likely the game will no longer be supported after a few years, so fans should be aware of that.
