Even though the original Demon Slayer manga hasn’t been published for around five years, the series has become incredibly popular. This is largely thanks to the huge success of the anime film, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 — Akaza’s Return, which premiered in July 2025. The movie was a phenomenal hit, breaking all previous box office records for both the Demon Slayer franchise and anime films in general.
It’s obvious that fans love Demon Slayer and are eager for more content. Unfortunately, the original manga finished in 2020, and its creator, Koyoharu Gotouge, hasn’t said much since then. While a return to Demon Slayer seems unlikely, Gotouge is probably planning a new manga, hoping to capitalize on the series’ immense popularity. The author previously mentioned wanting to create a new manga in a fanbook.
Demon Slayer’s Creator Gotouge Has Already Teased A New Manga
Demon Slayer is now one of the best-selling manga series ever. Its anime adaptations and films have become incredibly popular worldwide. In Japan, the series’ two movies actually took the top two spots at the box office, and this success has boosted manga sales too. With only 23 volumes available, over 220 million copies of the Demon Slayer manga are currently in circulation – making it the best-selling manga series per volume globally.
None of Demon Slayer’s success would have been possible without Koyoharu Gotouge, the series’ original creator. Though she’s stepped back from working on Demon Slayer, fans are eager to see what she creates next. Gotouge has expressed interest in starting a new manga, and even mentioned in a Demon Slayer fanbook that she’d like to write a romantic comedy. While she shared this idea some time ago, it seems she has a clear vision for her next project. As one of today’s most popular manga artists, this new series has the potential to be incredibly successful and could fill the void left by Demon Slayer.
Following the completion of Demon Slayer, Koyoharu Gotouge expressed a desire to create a hilarious science fiction romantic comedy – something that would really make people laugh. They shared a fondness for classic alien films as inspiration, according to the Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook 2.
Gotouge’s New Manga Will Be A Sci-Fi Comedy
Koyoharu Gotouge, the creator of Demon Slayer, may return to making manga in the future, and her next project will likely be very different. While Demon Slayer took place in a fantastical, historical Japan with battles against demons, Gotouge has expressed interest in a science fiction romantic comedy. This new manga could involve aliens and feel somewhat similar to the series Dandadan. It’s worth noting this information comes from a 2021 fanbook, so her ideas may have evolved, but it’s currently the most concrete hint about her next work.
Gotouge Has Yet To Start Work On The New Manga
Fans are eager to find out when Koyoharu Gotouge might begin a new manga series in Weekly Shonen Jump, but there’s no confirmed date. Since the release of the fanbook, she hasn’t announced any plans for a new project, so everyone will just have to wait for an update. Now, while Demon Slayer is still incredibly popular, would be a great time for her to start something new, as many fans would likely be excited to see it. It’s also worth noting that Weekly Shonen Jump could really benefit from fresh, exciting manga, and Gotouge is an experienced artist who could help fill that need.
Koyoharu Gotouge is sure to create popular works in the future, but it’s unlikely anything will reach the level of success she achieved with Demon Slayer. The manga has become incredibly famous – a truly historic hit – and it’s hard to imagine any artist, whether established or new, being able to replicate that impact. Demon Slayer will be remembered as a classic for years to come.
