PC Gamers Can Play Popular Sci-Fi Game for Free Until February 23

The popular sci-fi game, Star Citizen, is currently free to download on PC until February 23rd. After that, it will return to its regular price, which depends on the chosen game package – ranging from $55.35 for the basic Starter Pack to over $100 for more comprehensive options. Sci-fi fans can download Star Citizen and find installation instructions and a new player’s guide on the Roberts Space Industries website.

Star Citizen is a multiplayer game where players can trade and fight in space. It’s been in development for a long time, starting with a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. The developers, Cloud Imperium Games, initially aimed to raise $2 million, but have since collected over $900 million by selling virtual ships and in-game items. This makes Star Citizen one of the most funded crowdfunded projects and one of the most expensive games ever made. However, the game is still in early access with no confirmed release date, which has caused some debate among gamers. Despite this, many players are still excited about the game and occasionally get to try it out for free.

Star Citizen Delays Controversial Feature After Fan Backlash

Star Citizen appeases fan controversy over a recently released feature with a promise to keep gameplay fair for the entire player base.

To celebrate this special Star Citizen event, a friend referral program is also running. Players can share codes with friends who play the game. When a new player buys a starter pack or spaceship for $40 or more, both they and the referring player will get rewards. New players will receive the Greycat Aril ‘Red Alert’ armor set, complete with a toolbelt and backpack, and existing players will get a Lovestruck-painted Consolidated Outland Hoverquad.

This free access period is designed to generate excitement for both Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitious project, and its single-player companion, Squadron 42, which is currently scheduled to launch in 2026. Chris Roberts, the founder and CEO of CIG, recently confirmed that Squadron 42 is now fully playable, making a release this year more probable. Allowing players to try Star Citizen for free gives them a chance to experience the game’s universe before Squadron 42 arrives. The story campaign for Squadron 42 is expected to take around 40 hours to complete and features a star-studded cast including Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman, and Henry Cavill.

Reports suggest Squadron 24 is nearing a beta release, while Star Citizen is still targeting a 2027 or 2028 launch. Despite being in early access since December 2017 and facing dwindling player hope, Cloud Imperium Games insists Star Citizen will eventually be fully released. Limited-time events, like the free-to-play promotion this February, are designed to maintain player engagement, let fans test out the game’s ships, and foster a community. It’s still unclear how this ambitious space game will progress in the coming years.
