Many great video games offer intricate stories filled with important moral choices. These games often let your decisions and actions change the story’s path, leading to different endings. But it’s not always clear which choices have a real impact, or which ones will significantly alter where the game goes, potentially in unpredictable ways.
It’s not always obvious how your choices will impact the game, and you might not even realize when you’ve made a mistake. Even small decisions can lead to disastrous results, sometimes resulting in the most frustrating and unfair endings in gaming. So, think carefully about what you choose – or don’t, and see what happens!
Undertale
Kill Anyone, Even Once
Most players know now that Undertale can be completed in two main ways: by completing the game without killing anyone (a pacifist run) or by killing everyone (a genocide run). However, many didn’t realize when the game first came out that even killing just one enemy would prevent them from achieving the pacifist ending. The game subtly guides players, and failing to pay attention can have significant consequences, especially considering how Undertale challenges the typical violence found in most games.
Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale, intentionally made it so that killing even one character instantly prevents you from achieving a true Pacifist ending. Many players discovered this the hard way, often when Toriel attempts to prevent them from leaving, and refuses to move forward. Some hoped they could bypass this by simply not fighting, but that doesn’t work. The game emphasizes that every life is important and that all acts of violence have lasting consequences.
The Quarry
That Damn Rabbit
Supermassive Games is known for creating unexpected challenges and forcing players to make decisions with potentially serious consequences. Their game, The Quarry, perfectly illustrates this with a seemingly simple choice involving a lost stuffed animal and a freezer. The story follows camp counselors trying to leave for the year, and one of them, Abbey, finds a camper’s favorite toy. She must decide whether to leave it behind or try to return it to its owner.
Players familiar with Supermassive Games will immediately recognize this as a crucial decision with far-reaching consequences. The seemingly simple fact that a toy makes noise will likely cause clever players to hold onto it, fearing it might reveal their location. However, they won’t realize that doing so could lead to a slow and painful death for another character. Later on, this toy becomes vital to Kaitlyn’s survival. If she isn’t infected by a werewolf, she won’t be able to survive unless she throws the toy into the freezer. Often, this leads to Kaitlyn trying to hide in the freezer, where she gets locked inside and freezes to death.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man Of Medan
Julia’s Beer
In The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan, players face another difficult decision with potentially harsh consequences. After Alex proposes underwater, things can go wrong if Julia panics about her brother and swims to the surface too quickly. This creates a tense moment and also puts Julia at risk of decompression sickness, or “the bends,” demonstrating how choices build both suspense and real danger throughout the game.
After a tense dive and a surprising proposal, Julia returns to the boat and relaxes with a beer. But in The Dark Pictures Anthology, even small decisions can have huge consequences. That beer in Man of Medan is one of the first choices players make that can lead to trouble. From then on, Julia is unknowingly in a dangerous situation. Even if she avoids pirates, poisonous gas, and the hazards of the crumbling ship, she might still not survive. By the time the effects of that beer become clear, players have usually forgotten all about it.
Disco Elysium
Be Nice To The Weird Neighborhood Kid
In Disco Elysium, even seemingly minor decisions can lead to major problems. These consequences can happen because of choices you make, or even just bad luck with a dice roll. The game starts with your character being incredibly fragile – he can literally have a heart attack while getting dressed! Despite the fantastical elements, like getting a loan from an otherworldly being, the game also makes you focus on everyday things, such as how you interact with the local teenagers.

Cuno is a difficult person – he can be intimidating and unpleasant. However, he’s essentially a troubled child who’s had a rough life. Instead of reacting with anger, try to build a connection with him. If you can, he might be the one to help detective Harry du Bois when he’s in a tight spot.
Silent Hill 2
Don’t Forget Mary
In the game Silent Hill 2, James is haunted by guilt and pursued by terrifying creatures, but the game also requires him to occasionally pause and check his items. Surprisingly, how often James looks at a photo of his deceased wife, Mary, actually impacts the game’s ending.
Viewing Mary’s photo or the letter she sent to James makes it more likely you’ll achieve the “Leave” ending, which many players consider the best outcome. However, be careful! Examining Angela’s knife in James’ inventory could ruin your chances of escaping Silent Hill safely.
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Pick Up The Doll
Silent Hill 4: The Room centers around a single apartment building, both in the normal world and a disturbing alternate reality. The game’s scariest and most confining moments happen inside Henry’s apartment, where unsettling events constantly test his mental state. Players need to manage these occurrences, but they have limited resources, and failing to do so can quickly turn the apartment—the only seemingly safe place—into a terrifying environment.
Walter, who is clearly disturbed and untrustworthy, offers Henry a doll as a source of comfort. As usual, the developers of Silent Hill are presenting a clear choice: accept the strange gift, or decline it. While it’s polite to accept, it’s much smarter to not take things from strangers. If Henry takes the doll, his apartment will be haunted by the sound of crying babies seemingly coming from within the walls. Unless you’re aiming for the worst possible outcome, it’s best to refuse the doll.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Snowball Fight
A central element of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the bond between Ciri and Geralt, which influences how she feels and the choices she makes. While the game focuses on saving people and fighting evil, it’s also important to enjoy lighter moments. During the “Blood on the Battlefield” quest, Geralt can choose to either share a drink with Ciri or have a fun snowball fight with her.
Choosing the second option sets the player on a path towards the game’s happy ending. However, if they choose to have a drink instead, Ciri will become upset and make poor decisions. A simple snowball fight could be all it takes to lift her spirits and ultimately save her life.
