Frost Moon skills are central to playing the Samurai class effectively in Nioh 3. They work closely with the Ki Pulse system, and mastering these three attacks in each stance will significantly improve your combat skills. This guide will teach you the fundamentals of Frost Moon skills, including how to perform them and when to use them during battles.
Nioh 3 Frost Moon Attacks, Explained
Okay, so the Samurai’s Frost Moon skills are basically follow-up moves you can do after using a Ki Pulse. Here’s how it works: you use a Ki Pulse to spend Ki, then quickly press and hold R1 (or RB on Xbox), and follow it up with Square, Triangle, or X (or X, Y, or A on Xbox). If you use the Frost Moon skill that matches the stance you’re already in, it’s a normal attack. But if you switch stances before using the Frost Moon skill, it triggers something called Flux, which gives you a bigger Ki boost than just a regular Ki Pulse. It’s a cool way to get more Ki if you’re good at switching stances!
To use a Frost Moon skill, you first need to unlock it in the skill tree. Then, simply press the button combination shown in the skill’s description. Let’s take Frost Moon: Humanity, a Mid Stance attack, as an example.
- Spend Ki with attacks
- While in Mid Stance, press and hold R1/RB to perform a Ki Pulse
- While holding R1/RB, press Square/X to perform Frost Moon: Humanity
The button combination for Frost Moon: Heaven (High Stance) and Frost Moon: Earth (Low Stance) is the same as for other attacks. However, when changing stances, you’ll first perform a Flux state before the Frost Moon attack. This means you need to press the stance button twice while holding R1/RB – for example, if switching from Mid to High Stance, press Triangle/Y twice.
In Nioh 3, using Frost Moon attacks functions like a standard Martial Art. This means each attack drains your Samurai Martial Arts Gauge when it’s full. Using up the gauge while attacking with Frost Moon will increase the damage dealt.
Additionally, Frost Moon attacks have different properties based on their stance:
- High Stance Frost Moon deals the most damage out of all Frost Moon attacks
- Mid Stance Frost Moon has the most reach; you will either step forward with your weapon or thrust it toward your target
- Low Stance Frost Moon disengages you from your enemy, taking you a few steps back
The Samurai’s Martial Arts Gauge normally holds enough energy for two powerful attacks. Remember this to maximize your damage output.
