Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a fantastic adaptation of The Hedge Knight, the first story in The Tales of Dunk and Egg. It successfully brings the novella to television and even expands upon it with new scenes. However, even with these additions that build out the world and characters, the original story in The Hedge Knight feels a little too short to comfortably fill all six episodes.

With only a few pages left to cover from The Hedge Knight, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will conclude its first season with Episode 6. This is a change from the earlier Game of Thrones seasons, which typically had ten episodes. The good news is that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will return each year, with Season 2 expected in 2027 – a more consistent release schedule than House of the Dragon.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 1 Officially Ends With Episode 6
The Trial of Seven is near the end of the story in The Hedge Knight, and the TV series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already added extra scenes to build Dunk’s history. Episode 5 included a flashback showing Dunk’s life in Flea Bottom, how he became acquainted with Ser Arlan of Pennytree, and his connection with a character named Rafe, who was only briefly mentioned in The Mystery Knight. Now, the final parts of the story to be adapted are Maekar finding out about Baelor’s death, a sad conversation between Valarr and Dunk, and Dunk agreeing to take Egg on as his squire.
The upcoming sixth episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will likely only feature about five minutes of new footage, or even less. To fill out the episode, it will likely include additional scenes focusing on secondary characters and concluding their storylines. We can expect to see Raymun Fossoway establish a new branch of House Fossoway, known as the Green Apples, and Lyonel Baratheon have another conversation with Dunk, as shown in the episode preview. There’s also a good chance Dunk will be reluctant to accept Egg as his squire, adding some tension to the finale.
The Dunk & Egg Novellas Just Don’t Have Enough Story For 10 Episode Seasons
Unfortunately, viewers who enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms should expect each season to be quite short. The stories the show is based on – The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight – aren’t very long, and are similar in length to The Hedge Knight. It’s highly likely that both Season 2 and Season 3 will have only six episodes.
With George R.R. Martin having finished writing the source material, the show might pause after adapting The Mystery Knight in Season 3. However, Martin did provide the showrunner, Ira Parker, with detailed notes for future seasons based on The Tales of Dunk and Egg. While this could allow the series to continue, these notes are brief, making it unlikely that any season beyond the third will have more episodes.
