Throughout the series Naruto, the village of Konoha saw multiple Hokage take leadership, each playing a vital role in its growth, safety, and overall well-being. Hashirama Senju, often called the God of Shinobi, stands out as particularly revered, not only for his incredible strength but also for his enduring wish for a world free from conflict and animosity.
Although Hashirama’s vision wasn’t completely achieved until after he passed away in Naruto, his widespread impact ensured he wouldn’t be forgotten by the ninja world. Consequently, his legacy became the benchmark for all future Hokage, including Naruto Uzumaki, and they would all be measured against his accomplishments.
Hashirama Brought Peace to the Warring States
Before hidden villages were established, the ninja world during Hashirama’s era was a time of complete disorder. Everyone fought for their clan – adults, teens, and even children – leading to countless, needless deaths and fueling a constant cycle of hatred.
Witnessing the conflict, Hashirama dreamed of a future where children wouldn’t have to fight. He held onto this dream throughout his life, and it drove him to end the endless wars by choosing togetherness over animosity and collaboration over violence.
Honestly, what always gets me about Hashirama is that he didn’t just crush his enemies, like the Uchiha. He actually tried to make peace with them, offering treaties and a chance to live together! It’s amazing to think that without his leadership and vision, all those clans would still be at war, and countless kids would have grown up knowing nothing but fighting. He truly changed everything.
There’s No Konoha Without Hashirama
The Hidden Leaf Village, and indeed all the major ninja villages, wouldn’t exist without Hashirama. Neither would any of the Hokage who came after him. Hashirama is the one who founded Konoha, though Madara Uchiha was a vital partner in that achievement.
As the first leader of the Hidden Leaf Village, Hashirama Senju helped the children grow up with education and fun. He also worked to maintain peace by managing tensions with the Uchiha clan and preventing old conflicts from resurfacing. Despite being betrayed by Madara Uchiha repeatedly, Hashirama remained dedicated to protecting the peaceful village he had worked so hard to build.
I saw something incredible happen – even the strongest ninja clans decided to join forces with Hashirama. They willingly accepted his leadership and the idea of Konoha being a home for all shinobi, without any real resistance. It was a powerful display of unity.
The Tailed Beasts Bowed to Hashirama
Hashirama is remarkably powerful in Naruto, capable of controlling the Tailed Beasts on his own. Unlike others, he doesn’t require assistance from teammates to capture them. His exceptional Wood Release ability and massive chakra reserves allow him to easily overcome even the most formidable Tailed Beasts.
Given his incredible strength, it’s easy to see why other leaders of the ninja villages greatly admired Hashirama. At the time, capturing eight out of the nine powerful Tailed Beasts was considered almost impossible, but Hashirama did it with apparent ease.
Interestingly, Hashirama willingly gave away the Tailed Beasts without asking for anything in return, believing it would create a better balance of power. He was confident in his ability to control them if they ever became uncontrollable, so he wasn’t worried about giving them to other villages.

Defeating Madara Again and Again
Long before Naruto and Sasuke, there was a legendary rivalry between Hashirama and Madara. Hashirama consistently defeated Madara, starting from their childhood, due to his superior skills, intelligence, and strategic thinking. Madara always ended up on the losing side of their many competitions.
Throughout their battles, Hashirama consistently defeated Madara. Even when Madara gained immense power, including the Nine Tails and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, he couldn’t win against Hashirama. This demonstrates just how incredibly powerful Hashirama was.
Hashirama earned the title “God of Shinobi” because he was incredibly powerful, and even the circumstances of his death are unknown. If he’d fallen in battle, his killer would be famous, but there’s no record of anyone ever defeating him.
He Passed on the Will of Fire
Throughout the Naruto series and continuing into Boruto, the ninja of Konoha are united by a core belief called the Will of Fire. This idea, originally promoted by Hashirama Senju, emphasizes peace and working together. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, and still today, it inspires ninja like Boruto and his friends to choose cooperation over conflict and strive for a world without hatred.
The Will of Fire is essential to the ninja of the Hidden Leaf Village. It’s what keeps Konoha strong, protecting it from both problems within and dangers from outside. Essentially, it motivates each new generation of ninja to see everyone in the village as family.
This idea is similar to why a Hokage dedicates themselves to protecting the village, always prioritizing its needs. It’s also a great way for Konoha’s ninja to remember Hashirama’s unwavering devotion.
Hashirama Remained a Humble God of Shinobi
Hashirama was a remarkably down-to-earth leader, despite his incredible strength. He might have seemed cold and serious at first, but he was actually a kind and caring person deeply committed to protecting the village of Konoha.
It’s surprising to learn he enjoys gambling, showing a different side of his character. The show also highlights his tendency towards sadness, and it’s interesting to watch his quick shifts in emotion, going from confident to worried.
It’s surprising to learn Hashirama had a playful side, considering his immense power. At his peak, he could have reshaped the world, but he remained humble and used his abilities for good. Unfortunately, later generations of power-hungry ninjas exploited his DNA, hoping to gain a fraction of his incredible strength.
Hashirama Didn’t Seek the Hokage Position
While Naruto always dreamed of being Hokage, Hashirama didn’t initially desire the position himself. He actually thought Madara would be a better leader and wanted to offer him the role instead.
Hashirama truly believed Madara would be the best leader for Konoha. He even wanted to immediately add Madara’s face to the Hokage Rock to honor his friend and ensure his accomplishments were remembered forever.
As many fans remember, Hashirama became Hokage after a popular vote. He hoped this would show respect and build trust with Madara, ultimately uniting the Uchiha and Senju clans.
