How to Beat Otoroshi in Nioh 3

Otoroshi is a challenging boss players encounter early in Nioh 3’s Heian Era. Despite its massive size, this yokai is surprisingly agile, and unprepared players might struggle. While its powerful grab attacks, sweeping strikes, and the intimidating Dark Realm phase can be frightening, there are many ways to counter Otoroshi’s deadliest moves. This guide will help you beat Otoroshi in Nioh 3 more easily, without needing to summon help or rely on unfair tactics.

Nioh 3 Otoroshi Boss Fight

Otoroshi is relatively simple to handle when it’s moving on the ground. While its close-range attacks are easy to anticipate, it sometimes changes the timing, much like the boss Baba Nobuharu. It also has two powerful grab attacks that can inflict significant damage. During this phase, your main goal should be to:

  • If you’re using Ninja Style, use Mist to constantly reposition toward the boss’ back. Otoroshi’s backstab hitzone is a bit weird, but generally, you’ll want to aim for the base of the boss’ spine.
  • If you’re using Samurai Style, focus on Deflecting attacks. Once you familiarize yourself with Otoroshi’s melee combos, parrying the boss becomes super easy.
  • Use Fire damage whenever possible. Ninja Style’s Flame Breath is excellent for this boss fight.
  • Both of Otoroshi’s grab attacks can be avoided by sprinting or dodging to the boss’ sides. Be especially careful about the dashing grab move, as it can stil hit you while you’re running.
  • Use Guardian Spirit skills to Burst Break incoming attacks. Fast skills from spirits like Nekomata, Shin-Roku, and Guhin are great at knocking Otoroshi out of its unblockable clap attacks.

Dark Realm Phase

When Otoroshi enters its Dark Realm, it changes its attacks and stands up. To defeat it during this phase, focus on hitting its exposed belly. The best chance to do this is when it’s firing spirit projectiles – use a ranged weapon or Shurikens to break its weak spot.

During the normal phase of the Otoroshi fight, try to lower its Ki as much as possible. This makes it easier to stun the boss when it enters the Dark Realm, potentially skipping that phase entirely. When the boss does enter the Dark Realm, be very aggressive – you want to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Attacking bosses with powerful Ki-based martial arts moves will stagger them faster. The kick combo from the Ninja Sword is particularly effective at lowering an enemy’s Ki.
