Despite many other handheld gaming PCs being available, the Steam Deck remains a popular choice for gamers, though it’s proving difficult to buy at the moment. Like many other hardware products, the Steam Deck is affected by the current supply issues with memory and storage.

Things are really shifting at Valve! It feels like they’re trying to make a bigger push into the console world, but it’s coming with some changes. I was a little bummed to hear they’re stopping production of the original Steam Deck LCD model at the end of 2025 – that means if you want a new one, you’ll have to go for the more expensive OLED version. Plus, there’s been a lot of talk about the Steam Machine, and it sounds like Valve won’t be lowering the price on that one, so it’s likely to be pretty costly. Now, it’s starting to feel like even getting a Steam Deck in the future might be tricky, which is a real shame!

Valve Confirms the Steam Deck is Sold Out Due to Memory and Storage Shortages

Recently, Steam Deck fans noticed the device was sold out in the U.S. and wondered if a shortage of RAM, potentially caused by artificial intelligence demands, was to blame. Valve has now confirmed this is the reason. A notice on the U.S. Steam store says the OLED models are experiencing intermittent stock issues in some areas due to ongoing shortages of memory and storage. Additionally, because Valve has stopped making the older LCD model, that more affordable version is no longer available except through resale markets.

Valve hasn’t said when more Steam Decks will be available, and that makes sense – they probably don’t know for sure themselves. The market for computer memory has been very unstable recently. Many memory manufacturers are now focusing on supplying AI data centers, which has created shortages and caused prices to fluctuate wildly for other products. Most hardware companies have acknowledged this issue, and Valve has already been affected – they postponed announcing the Steam Deck’s price and release date in February because it was hard to predict a reasonable cost and timeline given the current market conditions.
