Solo Leveling centers around Sung Jin-Woo, a weak hunter who gains incredible power through a mysterious System. While it’s exciting to see him grow stronger, the story doesn’t give enough attention to many of the other characters, who often feel underdeveloped despite having interesting possibilities.
Sung Jin-Woo dominates the story in Solo Leveling, often overshadowing other characters who end up feeling like supporting players. Here are six of the most promising characters whose potential abilities and storylines were unfortunately underdeveloped.
6. Yoo Jin-Ho
D-Rank Hunter
- Becomes a Vice-Guild Master
- D-Rank Hunter but upgrades his abilities with high-quality equipment
- One of Jin-Woo’s first allies
Yoo Jin-Ho wasn’t a particularly strong Hunter – he was only D-Rank – but he was still capable of getting better. Because he was one of Sung Jin-Woo’s earliest allies, he’d teamed up with another skilled Hunter, and that experience had made him braver and a more thoughtful strategist.
Despite being a well-rounded character, Yoo Jin-Ho’s role in Solo Leveling diminishes as the story progresses. While he had the ability to support others through planning and tactics, he becomes less important once Jin-Woo gains immense power. He could have been a valuable asset as a strategist and a close friend, offering Jin-Woo a much-needed connection to reality.
5. Min Byung-Gyu
S-Rank Healer
- Close to Baek Yoon-Ho
- Was part of the Jeju Island Raid Party
- Defeated by the Ant King
Min Byung-Gyu was a highly skilled healer, considered one of the best – an S-Rank – and played a key role in events like the Jeju Island Raid. He consistently supported his team by boosting their stats and providing crucial healing. Sadly, he was unexpectedly killed by the Ant King before he could further develop his powers or continue helping his friends.
Min Byung-Gyu’s death in Solo Leveling felt unnecessary and ultimately diminished his character. He was a powerful healer, but also a genuinely kind and ethical person, and a good friend to Baek Yoon-Ho. It was a shame to see him go, as he deserved either a chance to continue fighting with his friends or the option to peacefully retire from being a Hunter.
4. Baek Yoon-Ho
Guild Master of the White Tiger Guild
- Has the rare Beast Transformation ability
- S-Rank Hunter
- Physically and tactically powerful
Baek Yoon-Ho is a strong Hunter, ranked as S-Class, but he often gets lost in the shadow of Jin-Woo. What makes him unique is his rare ability called Beast Transformation, which dramatically boosts his strength and speed. Despite this impressive skill, he doesn’t appear much in the story.
Beyond being physically strong, he genuinely cares for his guildmates and understands they have lives worth protecting. However, as Jin-Woo surpasses everyone else, his influence in battles diminishes. Baek Yoon-Ho, in particular, never had a chance to truly shine in a solo fight that was shown to viewers.
3. Choi Jong-In
S-Rank Mage
- Guild Master of the Hunters Guild
- Is the strongest mage-type Hunter
- Also known as the “Ultimate Soldier”
Choi Jong-In is a uniquely skilled mage, excelling in abilities like controlling groups of enemies, powerful area-of-effect attacks, and smart tactical thinking. As leader of the Hunters Guild, he’s responsible for assembling teams and providing strong leadership. Despite his talents, he doesn’t appear on screen very often.
Choi Jong-In had the potential to reveal the detailed preparation and strategy involved in tackling the Gates. Instead, his abilities are overlooked, which is a shame because he could have demonstrated that being a Hunter involves more than just combat skills.
2. Goto Ryuji
Guild Master of Draw Sword Guild
- Was the strongest Hunter in Japan
- Used raw strength to win battles
- Was defeated by the Ant King
Ryuji Goto’s character arc ended tragically. He was renowned as Japan’s strongest Hunter, relying on incredible strength and speed in battle. While many viewers found him arrogant and off-putting, his sudden death felt particularly unjust.
He could have been a compelling long-term opponent for Sung Jin-Woo, even though Jin-Woo was much more powerful. It’s shocking that Japan’s strongest Hunter was defeated so swiftly by the Ant King, before they even had a chance to truly fight.
1. Cha Hae-In
Vice-Guild Master of Hunters Guild
- Wife of Sung Jin-Woo
- S-Rank Fighter
- Possesses a rare ‘Mana Smell’ ability
Cha Hae-In is one of Korea’s most powerful Hunters, classified as S-Rank. She has many rare and potent skills, including the ability to instantly detect Mana, allowing her to sense nearby Hunters or monsters. She’s also a highly skilled swordfighter, capable of defeating enemies with just a few strikes.
Like many supporting female characters, Cha Hae-In’s role diminished as the story focused on Jin-Woo. While initially a powerful fighter close to Jin-Woo in skill, she eventually became sidelined due to marriage and motherhood, preventing her from continuing to fight. This felt like a missed opportunity, as she had the potential to be a major force on the battlefield.
