9 One Piece Characters Who Really Don’t Deserve The Hate

It’s common to dislike characters in One Piece. The show has a wide range of personalities – both heroes and villains – and some are bound to be frustrating or even infuriating due to their behavior, choices, and the trouble they cause. Even minor characters can sometimes attract negative reactions, even if they don’t play a major role in the story.

I’ve noticed a worrying trend with some One Piece characters – they’re getting a lot of unfair negativity. It’s gotten to the point where the fan reaction feels way too strong, and honestly, it overshadows what the character actually does in the story. What started as potentially helpful feedback has turned into something really toxic and unreasonable.

Nami

Hated for: abusive reactions and impulses, being weak, and her exaggerated love for money.

Nami is a vital part of the Straw Hat Pirates, but she still receives criticism from some fans. Her navigation skills have saved Luffy and the crew from getting lost at sea and protected them from the dangerous weather of the Grand Line on numerous occasions. Despite being one of the most beloved female characters in the series, she isn’t universally liked.

A lot of the criticism directed at her comes from how often she hits her fellow Straw Hat crewmates, leading some to question whether it’s playful or genuinely harmful. Additionally, her relatively weaker power level is a common point of contention for fans who focus heavily on the strength of characters in the series.

Some people question whether Nami is genuine when she prioritizes her friends over financial gain. However, despite her love of money, she consistently chooses the well-being of her friends, a trait especially evident since the events at Arlong Park.

Hated for: Sanji’s over-the-top perverted personality

I absolutely love Sanji! He’s totally one of the core members of the Straw Hat crew, right up there with Nami. His design is just awesome, and he’s a fantastic teammate. Seriously, some of his moments are among the best in the whole series! What I really appreciate is how complex he is as a character – the Whole Cake Island arc especially gave us a deeper look at his struggles and made me really feel for him.

Many fans find Sanji’s exaggerated, flirtatious behavior annoying and off-putting. While he’s generally polite to women, it sometimes crosses the line, coming across as creepy or embarrassing. This aspect of his personality often makes viewers uncomfortable.

Even though Sanji is a bit of a flirt, his amazing abilities – like his incredible cooking, powerful fighting skills, and steadfast dedication to his friends – easily make up for his playful behavior.

Chopper

Hated for: unnecessary screen time, little contribution to the Straw Hat Pirates, and being the mascot of the group.

It’s surprising, but Chopper often gets unfair criticism from One Piece fans. While he’s adorable, some viewers dislike him, even though he’s the crew’s doctor and a valuable member of the Straw Hats.

Some fans have pointed out that Chopper often complains, which can be annoying to watch. He also sometimes appears on screen more than other characters, leading to more criticism. Adding to this, the creator intentionally designed him to be the crew’s cute mascot.

Despite his limitations, Chopper is a hugely important member of the crew. While his medical expertise isn’t extensive, he’s repeatedly used his skills to save everyone. Seeing him grow from a shy, insecure reindeer into a confident and dependable friend adds a lot of heart to the story.

Shanks

Hated for: being too OP without feats, bland portrayal, and overall mystery.

I’ve noticed a lot of One Piece fans, myself included, are a bit frustrated with Koby’s power-up after the time skip! It feels like he went from being totally ordinary to incredibly strong way too quickly. Honestly, a lot of us feel like that progression should have gone to Smoker instead. It’s just… hard to believe how much power he gained without a Devil Fruit or any cool new techniques! It feels a little too convenient, and not in a satisfying way.

A lot of fans don’t appreciate the frequent comparisons between Koby and Luffy, which some see as unnatural. They feel it’s a mistake to build Koby up as if he has the same captivating personality and importance to the story as Luffy does.

Sudden increases in strength are common in One Piece, and Koby is experiencing one too. He’s also a good person within the Marines, known for his strong sense of justice and kindness.

Usopp

Hated for: Reverse character development, cowardly nature, and wasted potential.

Usopp frequently faces criticism for being seen as weak or a coward, even though he dreams of becoming a courageous warrior. While he’s had chances to demonstrate his excellent marksmanship, he often chooses to avoid fights and prioritize his own safety. This means he doesn’t fully utilize his skills, which could actually be very helpful to the Straw Hat crew in tough situations.

Usopp often feels like a secondary character in the story. He rarely gets the chance to shine alongside the other members of Luffy’s crew, which has prevented him from becoming a fully developed character. To make matters worse, many fans are starting to lose interest in him, feeling that his recent actions don’t align with who he used to be. It’s disappointing to see his character seem to be regressing instead of growing.

Even with his flaws, Usopp is a really engaging character. It’s enjoyable to cheer him on, particularly when he faces opponents who are much more powerful. His unpredictable nature and relatable struggles make his wins especially rewarding.

Foxy the Silver Fox

Hated for: Character design, extended role, and quirky abilities.

Many fans dislike Foxy because his personality is rough around the edges, and his appearance is more silly than intimidating. His devil fruit power also comes across as funny rather than dangerous, making it hard to see him as a credible threat.

Some people even find him a refreshing take on villains – he’s unpredictable rather than scary. And let’s not forget, he’s the villain who gave us Luffy with an afro!

Big Mom

Hated for: Crude personality, family drama, and character design.

Big Mom is considered a standout villain in One Piece, but some viewers dislike her unpredictable behavior, dramatic family issues, and fluctuating strength. Compared to other powerful leaders, her past doesn’t resonate with everyone, as she’s always been portrayed as greedy, self-centered, and irritating. She essentially remained immature, and no one dares to defy her.

These same traits that define her also make her a compelling villain in One Piece. She was born with the power of a natural disaster, instantly commanding fear and respect. It’s easy to see why – she’s imposing in size and incredibly strong, and poses a genuine threat. Adding to this, her past is deeply tragic; abandoned by her parents as a child, she was forced to find incredibly resourceful ways to survive.

Uta

Hated for: Sudden relevance in One Piece, OP abilities, and personal goals.

Many One Piece fans dislike Uta because she feels like she was added to the story too suddenly. She wasn’t properly built up, and it feels odd that someone who was supposedly Luffy’s childhood friend and Shanks’ adopted daughter is introduced so late in the series.

To make matters even more surprising, Uta possesses immense power that rivals even the strongest pirate crews in the world of One Piece. Many fans feel this undermines the established power levels within the series.

Introducing Uta into the world of One Piece is a great way to explore Shanks’ character more fully, as he’s always been something of a mystery. Plus, her abilities add a fresh and interesting visual style to the series.
