Like most Metroidvania games, God of War: Sons of Sparta lets you double jump. Kratos gets this ability thanks to Nike’s Victory Sandals, which let him run faster and jump higher. However, you won’t be able to reach everything right away. If you’ve noticed ledges you can’t quite reach, the Celestial Step ability is what you need – it unlocks even greater jumping power later in the game.
Want to learn how to double jump in God of War: Sons of Sparta? This guide will show you how to get the Celestial Step upgrade, unlocking this essential platforming ability.
How to Unlock Double Jump (Celestial Step) in God of War: Sons of Sparta
Climbing Mount Taygetos
Okay, so I was playing God of War: Sons of Sparta and finally unlocked Celestial Step! It took a while, though. You don’t get it right away – you have to first climb Mount Taygetos and beat Ponea, that second Stymphalian boss. Basically, you’ve gotta explore a bunch of areas and collect some Gifts from the Gods first. I remember needing the Victory Sandals, which you get from the Temple of Nike, before I could even get Celestial Step.
After getting the Spartan Xyele knives from The Krypteia, you can start climbing Mount Taygetos. If you don’t have the knives yet, just keep playing the main story until you reach that part.

Mount Taygetos is full of dangerous enemies and winding paths, so it’s easy to lose your way. Luckily, if you stick to the quest marker on your map, you should be able to navigate it okay. Before you get to Ponea, you’ll find a cave with a chained Gryphon making loud noises. Free her, then head to the right.
You’ll eventually face Ponea, the second boss in the Stymphalian area. Like the fight with Alastor, Ponea attacks with projectiles that fill the entire screen, so you’ll need to constantly dodge to stay alive. If you win, the Gryphon will appear and carry Kratos and Deimos to a new part of the Laconian Woods.

Explore the Laconian Woods
Okay, so after I dropped into the Laconian Woods and chatted with Deimos, I had to climb down this ladder into the next area. It was a lot of dropping from ledge to ledge, fighting off enemies as I went. Eventually, me and Deimos heard this weird sound coming from this statue of Lycurgus – that’s when things really started to get interesting!

After the two characters separate, immediately go into the next room. Move to the right side and climb the ladder to find the altar with the Celestial Step ability. You can double jump by pressing the jump button (X) again while you’re already jumping.
You can climb walls and ladders much faster by using a quick double jump technique. Simply jump away from the wall or ladder, then immediately jump back towards it.
Where Should You Go After Unlocking Double Jump in God of War: Sons of Sparta?
After getting the Celestial Step blessing and learning to double jump, you’ll be able to reach new areas and ledges. It’s a good idea to revisit places you’ve already explored, but your main goal should be to keep moving forward through the Laconian Woods towards the Temple of Artemis.
Inside the Temple of Artemis, you’ll find the Lunar Blade, a powerful new Gift of the Gods. Not only does it let Kratos slice through enemies, but it also allows him to move certain pillars, opening up new areas to discover.
Once you have the Lunar Blade, head right into the Passage of Monuments. This area will advance your main quest and also give you a fast route back to Sparta.
Now is a great time to add the Ray of Light ability to your Solar Sling if you haven’t already – it lets you destroy bars and clear other obstacles.
