Star Wars Outlaws Teases What Couldve Been a Great Stealth Feature

As a seasoned Star Wars fan with years of galactic adventures under my belt, I must say that Star Wars Outlaws has certainly piqued my interest, but it also left me yearning for more. The open-world exploration and densely populated NPC interactions were a delight, adding depth to the scoundrel story in the original trilogy timeline.

The open world of Star Wars Outlaws has a lot to offer, and while the core gameplay – stealth, shootouts, and space battles – may not be groundbreaking on its own, the ability to explore bustling town hubs filled with NPCs adds depth to every conversation or interaction. However, it’s worth noting that many scripted or optional events often result in stealth, gunfights, and space dogfights within Star Wars Outlaws. Stealth is particularly effective as it allows the protagonist, Nix, to strategically engage with enemies and environments. Yet, it doesn’t offer anything radically new.

It would be thrilling to witness a sequel, given the solid foundation for a rogue’s tale that has been established within the original trilogy’s timeline. However, this foundation feels somewhat forced in the third act of Star Wars Outlaws, where it abruptly introduces brief and unsatisfying exchanges between Kay Vess and her mother. Nevertheless, a post-credits scene hints at the potential for a heartwarming mother-daughter relationship to develop further in future installments. Interestingly, this scene (along with a precursor sequence) offers a tantalizing glimpse into a unique gameplay aspect that isn’t fully explored elsewhere.

Star Wars Outlaws Sadly Dangles Stealth Disguises in Players’ Faces

The scene mentioned earlier features Kay donning a stormtrooper’s outfit to fake escort Gedeek through an ISB vessel, all while searching for ND-5. This part isn’t very complex, but it does hint at a potential significant aspect of the stealth gameplay in Star Wars Outlaws, which seemed to have been overlooked.

Indeed, having outfits to slip into as disguises would have been incredibly neat as players are constantly stumbling into restricted areas that they can’t access without sneaking by undetected or blasting everyone in sight.

Wearing a stormtrooper uniform in the game serves as an enjoyable homage to characters like Han Solo and Luke Skywalker from “A New Hope,” but the fun quickly fades when one realizes that players could have infiltrated Galactic Empire bases in “Star Wars Outlaws” using the same tactic. Similarly, a scene after the credits shows Kay disguising as an officer to ‘question’ her mother in custody. It’s questionable whether the Imperials would fail to recognize her with her face exposed given all the chaos she had caused earlier while wearing this outfit.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Stealth is a Mere Husk of What It Could’ve Been

It’s a shame that while Kay’s criminal connections are crucial for engaging gameplay encounters, it might have been just as exciting to explore disguises that players could use to gain access to off-limits areas. Instead of having this powerful feature right away, it would have made the experience more rewarding if players had to work hard to find and unlock it within restricted zones, making the achievement feel more valuable from the start.

After sneaking deep enough into a restricted area belonging to the Crimson Dawn or even managing to open their vault, it would be intriguing if players could then pose as a member of the Crimson Dawn and move freely within any of their hideouts, regardless of whether they had a positive reputation with them. In a similar fashion, acquiring a stormtrooper uniform might enable players entry into large Imperial outposts.

In other words, at times, the challenge in the game could’ve arisen when enemies would periodically encroach upon Kay, forcing players into making swift decisions or choosing dialogue options that might expose them. If there’s ever a sequel to Outlaws, it should strive to incorporate such an aspect into its gameplay mechanics.
