After the Highguard website went down unexpectedly, many players wondered if the PvP raid shooter – which has faced criticism, declining player numbers, and staff departures – was about to be shut down. However, a developer at Wildlight Entertainment has clarified that the website is simply being moved to a new server and made easier to use, meaning the game itself isn’t going offline.
The game Highguard unexpectedly appeared at last year’s Game Awards, taking the final reveal spot traditionally reserved for highly anticipated titles. Considering games like Star Wars: Fate of The Old Republic, a new Divinity game, and Tomb Raider: Catalyst were also shown, many were surprised a free-to-play hero shooter was the last presentation. Interestingly, Wildlight, the game’s developer, didn’t even have to pay for Highguard‘s trailer – host Geoff Keighley simply enjoyed it enough to include it. Despite the initial exposure, the game has faced significant criticism since its reveal.
Highguard Dev Explains Website Outage
Featuring at the Game Awards brought a lot of attention to Highguard, and the shooter initially saw almost 100,000 players on Steam when it launched last month. Unfortunately, that number dropped quickly, with the game losing 80% of its players in just a few days. This sparked rumors that the game might be shutting down, especially when its website went offline this week. However, a developer explained the website is just being updated and streamlined, and that it’s not a priority right now as the team is focused on creating new content and updates.
After people started comparing Highguard to the recently closed game Concord, rumors quickly spread that Highguard might be shutting down, especially after its website went offline this week. One player predicted an official announcement was coming, while another thought the game servers would be next to go. However, it seems Highguard isn’t closing down anytime soon, as developers are still actively working on new updates for the game.
With Wildlight Entertainment recently laying off a significant portion of the team that worked on Highguard, it’s unclear how often the game will receive updates or how substantial those updates will be. This announcement came less than a month after the game launched on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. While Wildlight stated they are maintaining a small team to continue developing and supporting Highguard, they didn’t address concerns about the game’s low player numbers or the mixed reactions it received. The studio did, however, thank players for their continued support.
Steam reviews for the game Highguard are now considered ‘mixed’, which is better than the ‘mostly negative’ feedback it received when it first launched. Players initially complained that the main 3v3 gameplay felt too slow for the large maps. The developers, Wildlight, responded by adding a new, permanent 5v5 mode, but this hasn’t fully addressed the issue, as the game currently has between 1,000 and 2,000 players online at peak times on Steam. Performance on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S is currently unclear.
