Injustice 3 Should Make One Character More Than Just an Echo Fighter

Injustice 3 Should Make One Character More Than Just an Echo Fighter

As a long-time fan of both comic books and fighting games, I can confidently say that John Stewart deserves more than just being an echo fighter in Injustice 3. Having grown up reading Green Lantern comics, I’ve always appreciated the unique dynamics between Hal Jordan and John Stewart, and it’s a shame to see them reduced to visual swaps with the same moveset in the game.

Discussions about NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming game have been brewing, fueled by the enduring popularity of Mortal Kombat 1. It appears that Injustice 3 might be the next game on the horizon. Given that the last Injustice game introduced distinctive customization elements which have since been a hallmark of NRS games, its successor is expected to expand upon these features. Regarding the innovative premium skins that enable certain character slots to use the same set of moves for multiple characters, one of them could be upgraded from a skin to a full-fledged fighter in Injustice 3.

Incorporating characters like Power Girl and Vixen into established roles, similar to “echo fighters” in Super Smash Bros., allowed Injustice 2 to maximize its content while potentially sacrificing unique gameplay distinctions for each character. A notable example of this is John Stewart, who was essentially a skin for Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern, failing to highlight the significant differences between the two. Given the individuality and popularity of these heroes under the same mantle, it would be wiser for Injustice 3 to present both characters as separate entities rather than skins.

John Stewart Deserves More Than Echo Fighter Status

Green Lantern’s Injustice 2 Premier Skin Sold the Character Short

In the Injustice games, John Stewart shares the same moveset as Jordan, despite being visually swapped in each appearance. However, in actuality, these characters hail from distinct backgrounds that significantly shape their methods for creating Power Ring constructs and overall fighting style. The premium skin, with its exclusive voice lines and striking visual representation of the character, only serves to underscore the gap between his limited gameplay.

In the game Injustice 2, Atrocitus effectively presented an engaging overview of the Red Lantern Corps’ background, which harmonized well with Hal Jordan’s characterization. However, it was regrettable that John Stewart wasn’t developed in a similar manner, as this could have tapped into untouched potential. Moreover, Superman and Supergirl displayed distinct fighting styles within the game, warranting separate character slots. It would have been reasonable to accommodate more than one Green Lantern, each utilizing their powers uniquely according to their personalities.

There’s Room for Two Unique Green Lanterns in Injustice 3

Hal Jordan and John Stewart Are Inclined Toward Different Fighting Game Niches

Some less experienced fans may mix up the two main Green Lantern Corps members, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, due to their similar roles. However, they have unique personalities that reflect in their power tools. Hal Jordan is bold and impulsive, which suits close-combat or mid-range fighting styles, while John Stewart is strategic and disciplined, making him more suitable for a playstyle that keeps opponents at bay (zoning). John Stewart’s constructs, like guns and vehicles, have a military feel, whereas Hal Jordan uses giant fists and spiked balls in combat. So, in a hypothetical Injustice 3 game, Hal Jordan might focus more on aggressive attacks (rushdown), while John Stewart could emphasize his strategic skills.

Premier Skins Are Better Used on Further Lantern Fighters

In a hypothetical scenario where John Stewart isn’t confined to solely being a premier skin, the following edition of “Injustice” could shift this focus towards incorporating notable Green Lantern Corps members into the game. Characters like Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner might be given roles as skins for characters that suit their unique characteristics more, thereby enriching the representation of the Green Lantern Corps in the next installment of the series.
