One Piece Quietly Sets Up Luffy’s Next Haki Power Up

Monkey D. Luffy is a tremendously powerful character in the world of One Piece, and he’s proven himself to be a formidable force as the story nears its conclusion. As one of the Four Emperors, Luffy is already incredibly strong, but achieving his ultimate goal of finding the One Piece will require him to push his abilities even further. He’ll need to master his Devil Fruit powers and Haki to a level beyond even that of the other Emperors.

Luffy has already awakened his Devil Fruit powers and become skilled with Haki, but there’s still room for improvement, especially with Haki. Many characters in One Piece are currently more proficient with Haki than he is. Fortunately, the author, Eiichiro Oda, has planned for Luffy to receive another Haki upgrade after the story arc on Elbaf.

Luffy Has Already Learned Three Advanced Haki Types In One Piece

Luffy has Advanced Color of Observation, Arms, and Supreme King Haki

Luffy has become a master of all three types of Haki, a spiritual energy that develops during combat. He’s highly skilled in Observation Haki, which enhances his senses, Armament Haki, which he uses as a spiritual defense and attack method, and Conqueror’s Haki, allowing him to overpower opponents with his will. He’s refined all three abilities to an exceptional degree.

During the fight with Charlotte Katakuri, Luffy developed his Observation Haki to the point where he could anticipate his opponent’s moves. Later, in Wano, he mastered Armament Haki, enabling him to injure enemies from within without even touching them. The battle against Kaido then taught him to cover his body with Conqueror’s Haki, significantly boosting both his attack and defense.

Luffy’s Haki is incredibly strong, but it still has room to grow, as demonstrated by Shanks. Shanks has mastered Haki techniques that Luffy hasn’t learned yet, including the ability to instantly immobilize opponents from a great distance and, crucially, to negate another person’s ability to perceive attacks using Observation Haki.

Luffy is incredibly powerful with Haki, but he hasn’t reached Shanks’ level yet. However, Shanks is the inspiration for Luffy’s development, and just as Shanks continues to grow stronger with his Haki, Luffy will too. Right now, Shanks possesses several Haki skills that Luffy doesn’t, with ‘Observation Killing’ being one of the most significant.

Observation Killing is an extremely rare ability within Conqueror’s Haki, and currently, only Shanks possesses it. This power lets Shanks manipulate his presence so effectively that opponents can’t read him with Observation Haki, rendering it useless against him. Neither his actions nor potential future moves can be predicted when facing Shanks. Because of this, Observation Haki is ineffective. Luffy doesn’t currently have this ability and will need to develop it before fighting Shanks. It will be a tremendously valuable asset against powerful foes.

Luffy’s Haki Must Surpass Shanks’s Haki

Luffy is believed to be the current incarnation of Joy Boy, meaning he’s destined to be the strongest of his era. However, Shanks is currently more powerful, so Luffy needs to continue improving his skills. To reach his full potential as Joy Boy, Luffy must develop his Haki to exceed Shanks’. This will likely involve intense training during the Elbaf arc and beyond, learning advanced techniques like Observation Killing, ultimately preparing him to face Imu.
