A big discussion is happening within the Minecraft community as Mojang gets ready to release its first major update for 2026. The developers are excited about new features that promise to enhance the game, but some long-time players are unhappy. They feel that recent updates haven’t been substantial enough compared to the large expansions of the past, and they’re frustrated by what they see as a lack of significant new content.
For a long time, Minecraft followed a pattern of releasing one large, themed update each year. This created a lot of excitement as players eagerly awaited a collection of new landscapes, intricate features, and creatures. Recently, however, the developers, Mojang, have switched to releasing smaller updates more often. While this keeps the game consistently in the spotlight, it’s changed how players experience new content, making it less of a major event than it used to be.
The Final Baby Mobs Arrive in Testing, And Some Players Aren’t Happy
The newest test version of Minecraft, 26.1, has fully revealed the redesigned baby versions of creatures in the game. However, the response online hasn’t been positive. Many players, particularly on Reddit, are unhappy with the changes and the frequency of updates. One user, ArtisanalMoonlight, said they’d prefer only two updates a year, allowing players time to enjoy new content before the next release. Another player, Subjective Opinion, felt the constant small updates make the game feel disjointed and diminish its overall appeal.

The complaints aren’t simply about how much new content is released, but how it affects the modding community. Many Reddit users have explained that frequent updates put a lot of pressure on mod creators, who have to constantly revise their work to keep it compatible with the latest version of the game. One player put it simply: having to update mods with every release is exhausting. Because of this, some players are choosing to stick with older versions of Minecraft to avoid dealing with broken mods.
This update gives baby versions of several creatures – like hoglins, zoglins, striders, pandas, and the snifflet – a complete makeover. Instead of just making them smaller versions of the adults with big heads, the developers have created unique looks and textures specifically for the babies, making them much more distinct and adorable.
This update includes a number of technical improvements. Players can now use the Stonecutter to directly create different types of Deepslate and Stone. Adult horses have also had their appearance slightly adjusted to align with the new designs for baby horses. A long-standing issue has been resolved, allowing baby zombies, husks, and drowned to fit through one-block-high spaces again. However, many players feel the update lacks significant new content, and some have nicknamed it “The Nothing Update” because it mainly focuses on visual changes and bug fixes instead of adding new ways to play.
Most players may not notice a huge difference with this update, but certain groups are really happy with the changes. Players who enjoy the technical side of the game and server administrators appreciate the improvements under the hood, and those who like to build and create immersive worlds are also excited.
Image via Mojang Honestly, the biggest complaint I’m seeing is that this update just doesn’t feel as substantial as previous expansions. A lot of people, including me, are worried it’s all polish and no play – they’ve changed how things look, which is cool, but haven’t really given us anything new to actually do. We’re all waiting to see if these visual improvements will be enough to make up for the lack of fresh gameplay, especially since we don’t have a solid release date yet. It’s a big debate right now!
