Humor is hard to pull off in any art form, and video games are no different. Some games, such as Thank Goodness You’re Here and The Stanley Parable, use the interactive nature of games to create funny and insightful moments. Others, like GTA, rely on more subtle satire. Dark Farts: Parody Smell Edition aims to become another funny game worth playing.
As the title suggests, Dark Farts: Parody Smell Edition is all about silly, crude humor. The main character, who speaks with a strangely out-of-place accent, battles enemies using magical farts. He also fights with a warhammer, using it in one hand while his fart powers function similarly to magic in action games. The game tries to poke fun at the often-serious soulslike genre with its focus on flatulence, but it’s still unclear if it pulls it off.
Dark Farts: Parody Smell Edition Is Basically ‘Scary Movie’ in Video Game Form, for Better or Worse
The 2000s felt like a more carefree era. Before the rise of AI and when the internet was still relatively new, people generally felt optimistic about the future. This relaxed mood was reflected in a wave of silly, over-the-top comedies that you don’t see as much anymore. Filmmakers like Keenan Ivory Wayans, and the team of Jason Friedman and Aaron Seltzer, led the charge with parody films such as Vampires Suck, Scary Movie, and Epic Movie. These movies didn’t try to be sophisticated; instead, they used crude humor and exaggerated situations to poke fun at popular films.
Games like this aren’t as popular as they used to be, but Dark Farts clearly captures their energy. It’s obviously inspired by Dark Souls, as its combat and title show (the Steam page even calls it a “Souls-like parody”), and it also playfully pokes fun at Skyrim, with a similar hero’s journey and a Nordic-inspired look. Like those older films, Dark Farts relies heavily on silly, shocking humor, doesn’t take itself seriously, and frequently reminds you that it’s just a game.

Dark Farts Suffers from the Same Pitfalls as Scary Movie and Its Successors
Dark Farts is a game packed with silly bathroom humor and references to popular culture, much like the movies it draws inspiration from. It frequently jokes about common video game elements like in-app purchases, downloadable content, and predictable storylines, but doesn’t offer much real commentary on them. The game also satirizes powerful figures, with villains named after Vladimir Putin (Vlad Puffin) and Jeff Bezos (Lord Bez-Off, Hoarder of Boxes and Supreme Prime Overlord).
The game costs $20 on the PlayStation Store, though the Steam price hasn’t been announced yet. Keep in mind it’s a fairly short experience – most players will finish it in around two hours – and it doesn’t have much beyond the main story or complex features. If you’re not a fan of its crude humor, this game might not appeal to you.

Is Dark Farts So Bad It’s Good?
If you’re a fan of silly, crude humor, or enjoy games that are intentionally outrageous, Dark Farts might be worth checking out. It could even be one of those movies that’s so bad, it’s actually fun. If you like shock value and gross-out gags, despite the game’s flaws, you might find it amusing.
