Spider-Man 2’s Canceled DLC May Also Affect a Leaked Insomniac Game

Spider-Man 2's Canceled DLC May Also Affect a Leaked Insomniac Game

Key Takeaways

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be available on PC but has no planned DLC.
  • Insomniac’s decision to cancel DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 may impact future leaked games like the Venom title.
  • Despite canceled DLC, the leaked Venom game may still be in development and could take a different form than expected.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the news of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 hitting PC without any planned DLC is a bitter pill to swallow. Having grown up playing the Spider-Man series on various platforms, I was eagerly anticipating the promised DLC to tie up loose ends and provide more engaging content.

2024’s news about the PC release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is both exciting and disappointing for me as a gamer, since it means I can finally play the game on my PC with all the updates that have been released so far. Yet, it’s bittersweet because the announcement also confirmed that Insomniac has no plans for any DLC content.

It’s puzzling why Insomniac Games hasn’t given a reason for not releasing downloadable content (DLC) for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, especially since the initial game had significant DLC only two months after its launch, and there seems to be plenty of story expansion possibilities for the sequel. It’s possible that Insomniac decided to scrap all DLC plans for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in response to the data leak that occurred in April, as a way to stand up against the hackers responsible. Sadly, if this is the case, another game developed by Insomniac, which was leaked back in December, might also be at risk of being canceled.

Insomniac’s Leaked Venom Game May Be on Thin Ice

An Insomniac Game Titled ‘Venom: Lethal Protector’ Was Leaked Last December

In December last year, Insomniac Games suffered a major data breach, disclosing their intentions to unveil multiple games over the subsequent ten years. Among these games was a Venom-centric title tentatively named Venom: Lethal Protector, which was speculated to continue after the storyline of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, potentially resembling the gameplay experience found in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Regrettably, the development of the Venom game may be jeopardized because it stemmed from a leak, much like the canceled DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which was announced alongside the game’s PC launch.

Insomniac’s Decision to Cancel Leaked DLC Might Affect Its Plans for a Venom Game

One of the most worrying revelations about Insomniac canceling DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is that the same decision could be made about other leaked titles as well, including the Venom game. What ultimately makes decisions like this much easier for the developer is that titles like this haven’t even been announced or officially confirmed yet, so Insomniac could get away with scrapping things that are still only in their initial stages of development. However, if the Venom project is real and a full-sized game, Insomniac would surely think twice before tossing it in the shredder.

The key factor keeping the leaked Venom game afloat might be the simultaneous leaks of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 and Marvel’s Wolverine, as it’s highly unlikely that Insomniac will scrap these significant projects. It appears that the developer may have considered the DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 insignificant in relation to its broader franchise plans, but canceling two major upcoming titles would carry more weight than just dropping a few DLCs. However, the Carnage DLC could be an exception since the leaked Beetle and Spider-Verse DLC doesn’t set up the “The Flame” subplot as extensively as it does for Carnage. This suggests that either the Venom game or Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 will likely feature Carnage to properly conclude the Spider-Man 2 storyline.

Instead of assuming that “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” PC announcement solely refers to the cancellation of DLC, it might be more accurate to interpret it as hinting at other news. Since the DLC hasn’t officially been confirmed, technically it can’t be cancelled. Therefore, it’s plausible that Insomniac’s leaked Venom project is still in development and may take a different shape than initially anticipated.
