Avowed Dev Hopes RPG’s Biggest Criticism Has Been Fixed for PS5 Launch

Avowed is out now on PS5, having been exclusive to Xbox and PC for just over a year.

As the saying goes, patience is rewarded, and PlayStation players are definitely getting a much-improved game compared to what was available a year ago.

Our review of Avowed on PS5 shows it’s a fantastic RPG, largely because the developers at Obsidian have made significant improvements since the game first came out.

This update focuses on improving the equipment upgrade system, which was a major concern for players when the game was first revealed.

The game’s system for character advancement was a major issue for both critics and players. Essentially, how quickly you improved depended heavily on the quality of your weapons and armor. If your gear wasn’t good enough, you’d have a hard time defeating tougher enemies.

This could make exploring feel really restrictive, which was a big issue because you had to gather resources to improve your gear.

Obsidian listened to player feedback and worked to improve the game. According to gameplay director Gabe Paramo in an interview with RPG Site, they were surprised by how many players struggled with the upgrade system.

We aimed for a satisfying gameplay cycle where players complete challenges, improve their equipment, and then take on even tougher challenges. However, since the game features a large, open world, we discovered players were unexpectedly blocked while exploring, which disrupted that flow.

As a player, one of the biggest things I noticed early on was that when you explored new parts of the game, you’d quickly run into roadblocks – not because the enemies were too tough, but because you hadn’t leveled up enough yet! It was super frustrating. The developers, Pamo, heard us loud and clear, and they’ve totally fixed it. Now, the progression feels much smoother and less like you’re hitting a hard stop when you try something new.

So, I’ve been playing the newest version of Avowed, and honestly, they’ve made some really nice improvements. They’ve added better tutorials to help you understand how to upgrade stuff, and you get way more resources while playing, which is awesome!

Most notably, the game now includes gameplay settings that let you customize how powerful your equipment is, which significantly reduces repetitive grinding. Along with other combat adjustments, these options allow you to tailor Avowed to your preferred playstyle.

It’s great to see Obsidian listened to what players were saying and made improvements! Let us know what you think in the comments below.
